Confrontation

I took my seat next to Mackenzie and got a biro from the pot containg equiptment in front of us. Our desk was directly in front of Luke. I could feel his eyes boring into the back of my head, but I decided to ignore him. That is what he'd been doing most of the day, anyway.

"Oh my gosh did Ava lose you again? God, she is so not cut out for mentoring." Mackenzie commented on my lateness. I laughed a bit.

"Nah, we just messed about in the toilets for a bit." (A/N: Thats what she said)She heavily sighed.

"I've tried out for a mentoring role three years in a row and I've never got it. Even Ava got it. And she's Ava." Mackenzie sounded bitter.

"She was forced into it though." I said, trying to defend her.

"I know. But she's always getting fun opportunities."

"Mackenzie, I wouldn't exactly call mentoring fun."

"Yeah but you get extra credit. I need the highest qualifications possible to get into the university of Melbourne. It's ranked 34th best in the world, you know!" I didn't know but I was too tired and confused about Luke and everything to do anything other than nod.

Mr Jones was writing what we were learning about on the large whiteboard at the front of the classroom.

"Willem Janszoon. Can anyone tell me who that is?" Asked the teacher. Mackenzies hand shot up immediately.

"Okay, anyone other than Mackenzie?" Everyone looked around at eachother expectantly and then suddenly,

"Yes Luke?"

"He was the navigator who took part in the first known landing of Australia. And he was Dutch." I could tell he was smirking. All eyes were on Luke (except mine). I guess he didn't participate much.

"Surprisingly, that is correct."

All the girls collapsed into a fit of childish giggles and about 10 people were saying how smart and cute he was. How pathetic.

"Hey, Britney," Luke called to a girl the other side of the classroom. It was a girl who reminded me a lot of the person Luke had been attacking with his mouth just an hour earlier.

"Yeah?" she called back over to him. Everyone, including Mr Jones, weirdly, was listening.

"Are you Dutch? Cuz Amster-dayyymmm."

She thought for a moment "I don't get it." she said back.

"Uh. Basically-" Lukes explanation was cut short by Mr Jones.

"Yes, yes. Very funny Luke. That's enough of that for today, thank you. You and Britney keep your love life out of the classroom next time, okay?"

"I'll try, sir." Luke joked.

"Urgh." I said under my breath, hopefully just loud enough for Mackenzie to hear. I wasn't sure why, but I suddenly felt very angry, and I didn't know who with. I looked up from what I was writing to find virtually every eye on me.

"Lacey. That was really loud." Mackenzie whispered to me.

"I'm sorry, Miss Foster. Am I boring you?" Said Mr Jones. This was hands down one of my most embarrassing moments. The most embarrassing one was when I was 14, it involved a fake toe and a large amount of sticky tape. But that's a whole other story.

"Um no. Sorry, I have a cough." I replied, blushing profusely.

"Riiight. Let's continue then, shall we?" I nodded. I didn't trust my mouth enough to say anything else, it might come out extremely loud.

For the rest of the lesson, the class sat in silence. After a detention warning from Mr Jones, that is. The bell went and I made sure not to bump into Luke as I grabbed onto Avas' arm.

"Okay, don't leave me again." I said as I tried desperately not to get dragged away. Soon enough the corridors were empty, they must have wanted to get home fast.

"Okay. But I have to talk to Mr Jones one second." She pulled me toward Mr Jones.

"Hey sir. You know the homework? I can't do

it.

"Oh really? And why is that?" Mr Jones said in a bored tone, as if Ava had said this many times before.

"I don't have a pen."

"Borrow one."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"It's bad luck."

"Of course it is..Type it up."

"No computer."

"Ava-"

"Okay fine. I'll do it. Lacey, can I borrow a pen?"

"I thought it was bad luck?" I replied, I heard a snort from the classroom doorway and turned to see none other than Luke. Great.

"Luke. What do you want?" Asked Mr Jones suspiciously.

"Don't sound so glad to see me then," He smirked "Miss Bennson wants to know if you have the statistics from last year?"

"Oh, yes. Take them back for me would you?"

"Urgh. Fine. Lace, come with me? You can bring your friend." So now, when everyones gone, he speaks to me. Before I could open my mouth to shout at him, Ava was dragging us towards him, she had been suprisingly quiet since Luke had come. He turned to leave, holding the door open for us. The anger that had been building up all day suddenly came flooding out of me.

"No I will not 'come with you'. You've been acting weird to me all day. I knew no one besides you and Toby. And I couldn't exactly hang around with my cousin could I? I was alone, and you made me feel worse. You try moving to another country, leaving all your family and friends and then getting basically ignored by your only friend." I was breathless and on the verge of tears. But that that wasn't the only weird thing.

Luke Brooks was speechless.
