OrganizedRussell: please you guys. You're amateurs. Obviously the Siren AU is the way to go. Think about it! Beautiful men or women luring your characters in with song, develop an actual romance plot, magical events can occur, it just makes sense. Much more complex than a "pirate" or "mermaid" AU, I mean come on.
