Several days flew by and October was drawing to an end. Leaves filled the streets, falling from trees and forming large clumps of them in roads. Rain became dominant, and the small amount of summer that had briefly shown its face waved goodbye to Britain for the year.

My birthday was coming up in a couple of days. So was Dallas, and Drew’s. No one was excited about it. After the last few weeks, excitement seemed to be something of the past.

On the evening of October 28th Dallas and I sat down in our borrowed house, blocking out the other family that lived there, who happened to be throwing a Halloween party for all the kids in the neighbourhood. Dallas had a big sheet of paper blue tacked to the wall with everything we knew about Unseen. He stood beside it like a teacher beside a whiteboard, while I sat opposite him, looking into his eager eyes. Using one of his crutches, he pointed up to the top left corner of the paper.

“What do you think then Blond?” he asked. “Pretty sweet bunch of clues here.”

“So who are our main suspects?” I questioned optimistically, leaning forwards, resting my elbows on my knees and rubbing my hands together for warmth. Dallas’s shoulder hunched.

“We don’t have any… yet,” he muttered, embarrassment crossing his features.

“Well it has to be someone linked to my school,” I shrugged.

“Your school? Why?”

“Because of the pen that fell out of his pocket.” Dallas looked confused. I smiled, standing up and pressing my finger against the clue I had written. Dallas pulled a confused face, making me smile. “Remember what I said earlier?”

“What did you say?” he asked. I sighed amusingly.

“That I saw Unseen with one of my schools pens,” I mumbled, gazing right into his emerald green eyes. “And that you can’t get the pen unless you attend the school.”

“Ah yeah,” Dallas nodded. “I remember.”

“We don’t really have that much else though,” muttered, collapsing back into the chair, my arms crossed as my eyes scanned all the clues again. Nothing jumped out at me.

Dallas allowed himself to drop back against the wall, where he groaned.

“This is so frustrating,” he said, raising his voice. In literally all the time I’d been with him this was one of the first times he raised his voice that loud. It made me jump. Bouncing back of the wall he began to pace around the room, limping slightly from his bad legs. I followed, confused. “We’re missing something. I’m sure of it. We’re missing one vital clue.”

“Calm down,” I told him quietly. “Stressing out won’t help.”

“But we’re so close, Blond,” he said, turning sharply. “So, so close to an answer. We’ve never been this close, but there one simple thing that we’re missing. One thing that can bust this whole thing wide open. We… He’s…” He paused, looking confused, like he was only just realising what he was saying. A smile dawned on his face. “I know what we have to do.”

“What?” I asked, leaning forward. To my surprise, Dallas grabbed my arm, pushing me against the wall. He stood only a few inches away from me, his mouth split from ear to ear in a huge smile. “What are you doing?”

Dallas had a strong grip on my freckled arm. I was only wearing a T-shirt, and Dallas had such a tight grip on my bare skin that the top of my arm ached slightly. I couldn’t stop him. He looked completely different. Almost crazy. His soft caring eyes were now overwhelmed with excitement.

“Why was I such an idiot?” Dallas almost laughed. It was high pitched and slightly scary. I shrank back against the wall. “I’ve collected all the clues from you and me, but what about that other girl Unseen kidnapped and murdered?”
