"What are you looking at?" I ask Cameron as we pull into the filled lot. "You just look so cute in that jersey. " he gushed. "Why thank you love, you don't look too bad either...especially those baseball pants. " I replied adding a wink. "Oh really??" he teased jumping out of the car and opening my door. I hopped out, gave him a kiss, and tugged at his jersey. "Yes really, but I think it looks better off. " With that I sashayed off to the stands as Cameron ran to catch up. "Did you say what I thought you did baby?" he questioned wrapping his arm around my waist. "Mmm maybe...it depends on if you win this game. " I teased.
This was what my Friday night lights consisted of, Cameron's weekly baseball games. I made it an effort to go support him not only because he was always at every dance competition of mine but damn did he look good in his uniform. I followed Cam into the dugout and helped him get his stuff set out. I made small talk with some of his teammates as they came in. Once Cam got everything set up I reached into his bag and pulled out eye black. He would only need it for half of the game since it was a later game but it was our little tradition. I stood on my tippy toes and spread the pigment beneath his eyes which never left mine. When I finished he leaned down and locked his lips with mine, getting a pretty loud reaction from his team. I pulled away smiling, "good luck boys!" I yelled, blowing a kiss at Cameron. He caught it, placing it on his bat...another one of our traditions.
I left the dugout and found my usual spot on the bleachers. Our team was up to bat and Cameron was first. As he made his way to the plate, he looked up and I could see a smile under the shadow of his helmet. He took a few practice swings, traced an M in front of the plate and got ready. The first pitch was hit out of the park and I could feel Cameron's energy as he sped through the bases completing a home run.
The rest of the game didn't seem to go as well, the score was 12 to 4. Us being 4. Our team has just come off the field and started preparing for their up at bat. Cameron was on deck, taking his practice swings and I went up to the fence to calm him down. "Cameron, baby? " I asked. He took his helmet off and looked at me, his eyes were bloodshot. We interlocked our hands through the fence and I tried my best to reassure him, "darling this is a really good team, you guys are doing amazing...don't beat yourself up okay? I love you. " "thank you baby, I love you more. " he whispered and leaned in for a kiss. I found my spot back on the bleachers to watch the rest of the game.
The game ended with our team losing. I could see how upset Cameron was as he trudged into the dugout. I made my way over and once I was in the dugout I could see tears streaming down Cameron's face as he put his bat into his bag. "Oh cam." I exhaled, running over and wrapping my arms around him. He sobbed in my arms for a good minute or so and then lifted his head, "I just really wanted to win mads. This is our last game as a team, ever. After this we graduate and tonight was all that mattered...and we lost. " My heart broke to see him so hurt. "Cameron, I know that you wanted to win your last game but try to think of all you guys did over the last 4 years...all of your memories and wins, those are what define you guys as a team not your last game. I love you so much, and you did amazing. I'm so proud of you. " I reassured. "Thank you so much baby." he acknowledged, taking one last look at the field and stood up to go.
