The days start to go by in a blur and soon I'm down to a cast on only my left ankle and one on either wrist. New colors and new crutches. My pep is returning and I'm beginning to see pieces of the Old Sunny peek through. Finally.
I consider myself lucky that just when my pep returns it time for the opening bon fire. I'm not sure if it's because they feel bad or what, but I'm this year's Saluted Student. Someone who stands out. Like someone who did some crazy community service or had some sickness and recovered. I guess the accident and injury make me worthy of the title That makes me super nervous. I don't like crowds and I'm bound and determined to embarrass myself in some stupid way. I think back to all of the ban fires I have ever attended and take mental notes on what usually happens.
The cheerleaders do a dance and maybe some stunts. The band and twirlers do a song or two. The football captains and coaches do a short little speech. And then there's the circle and the Alma Mater. That pretty much sums it up. Then of course there's The T-shirt. Yes, The T-shirt. Now this is defiantly a country tradition.
Every year the football coaches each buy a shirt of the team we play the first game. This year it's the South Peak Strikers. Our backyard rivals for as long as anyone can remember. My job-- as Saluted Student-- is to make the first rip in each and pull a chunk off of each one. Them after I toss those into the fire, I hand the shirts over to the football captains for the team to take care of. Let's just say... it's not pretty. And it all goes up in flames. Ba-Dum-Tsss.
