Just an FYI before the chapter: The first few parts are in past-tense because Kris is basically replaying everything that happened today in his mind. I don't know why I started writing it like that, but yeah. Hopefully it doesn't turn you guys off as much as it turns me off.

"Even something really beautiful can be broken sometimes."

Math went by in one huge blur.

Ms. Miller lectured us about logarithms, but I couldn't hear a single word of it. Not with Justin sitting beside me, smiling as if the air between us hadn't shifted. Not with Stephany glancing at us from across the room, smirking and blushing whenever she caught Justin's eye. Not with Ava completely ignoring me, too busy texting on her phone to see that my entire aura was off.

And that was unnerving by itself. Ava never, ever, ever texted during class. The amount of makeup she had on, too, was almost nauseating to look at. She didn't look like herself at all.

"Ms. Wilde!" Slapping her ruler against the board, Ms. Miller looked at Ava with pure disbelief in her eyes.

Ava's head shot up from her phone. She at least had the decency to look a little embarrassed. "Ma'am?"

"Are you texting during my class?"

"Um . . ." I could practically see the gears in Ava's head as they churned for an answer. "Y-Yes, I am . . . but it's only because my little brother is sick at home today, and I just wanted to check up on him."

A lie. Ava doesn't have a little brother.

"Oh." Ms. Miller's eyes widened, the small bit of sympathy she possessed exuding from her face. "W-Well that's fine, then. You're free to leave the class if something comes up, alright?"

I almost wanted to laugh at how much of a fool she was being played for; I would have laughed, if I weren't for the fact that I was completely thrown off by how easily that lie left Ava's lips. My best friend never lied. She wasn't like my sister; Ava was a star student simply because she deserved it, not because of any trickery. To abuse her reputation was so unlike her, I couldn't stop the surprise from showing on my face.

Ava smiled - a smile that would look appreciative to an unknowing onlooker, but looked outright manipulative to me.

"Thank you," she said, her voice full of sugar.

I didn't miss the derisive look that she and Stephany shared when Ms. Miller turned her back. All of a sudden, I wanted to puke again. My crush was going on a date with the Bride of Chucky, and now she was even influencing my perfect best friend. And I didn't even want to think about the effect she had on Tyrese.

It was as if everything suddenly revolved around Stephany.

And as I someday feared would happen, I was being replaced.

Justin and I always walk to Spanish together.

It used to be Ava and I, but the arrival of my black-haired crush has changed the dynamic of things. A lot of things, if I am to be completely honest. It's not much of a problem, though; Stephany doesn't take Spanish with us, but she and Ava walk together long enough before they have to split. While Justin and I walk and talk about miscellaneous things, they walk behind us so closely that some could argue we walked in a small group.
