With Spencer not there, I actually talk to my friends throughout the school day. It goes by fast as all Fridays tend to do and I jump on my bed as soon as I get home. I usually don't have plans on Fridays anyway.
I check my phone and see that Spencer answered my text. "Hey Liam(;" it says. A rush flows throughout my entire body and a smile instantly appears on my face.
"When do you get back from the tournament? I missed seeing you 2nd period today," I reply. Talking to him and knowing it's him makes me feel so good inside. I wish he talked to me before this year.
I get a text and I'm ecstatic. But it's not Spencer. It's Erin texting me and Victoria in our group chat. "What are you guys doing tonight?" she writes.
"Nothing at all. Hbu?" I respond. I'm hoping we get to hang out. We all decide to meet at Erin's house and I have my mom drive me over a couple hours later.
After a while, when we're all in the basement and I'm alone with them, I finally get to be myself.
"Liam what have you been so caught up with lately?" Victoria says. "I miss wherever crazy Liam went!" She frowns but I know she's playing it up.
"I'm right here!" I yell and flop on the couch with a thud. I take a deep breath and try to work up the courage. "Guys I have something to tell you." As soon as I say that my phone buzzes. It's from Spencer.
I ignore it and decide to tell them everything going on. They stare at me wide-eyed the entire time I'm catching them up. When I finish it's dead silent. The air vent in the far corner of the room is the only thing that makes a sound for what feels like eons.
"Wait. Hold up. This is the Spencer that you always tell us about and how hot he is? The popular one?"
"Yes! I know I know I can still hardly believe it myself!" Which is true.
"You are so lucky he just grabbed you up like that," says Victoria.
"I know! He just texted me back hold on."
"What'd he say??" Erin exclaims.
"He said, 'I come back tonight. Our team won the tournament so we're going to Canada next weekend.' Aw, I hope it's not every weekend," I admit weakly to my friends.
"You guys should hang out. Or go on a date! That would be so cute!" Victoria screams.
"Yeah, I'll text him back and ask him!"
I ask him what he's doing Saturday, but I'm positive that he's probably going to a party or something. He's always with the other popular kids in our grade.
He responds quickly and says he's going to friends house tomorrow but will probably be home around 5 o'clock.
"Maybe we can hang out after if you want," I send.
"Like a date?" He sends back. I almost forget I'm at Erin's, but then I feel their breath creeping on my neck as they're glued to my phone for our conversation.
"Yeah, like a date (;" I write back. My friends and I laugh like children.
"Uh, sure. What did you have in mind?" Oh, right. I haven't thought about that.
"You guys should go to the movies!" says Erin.
"That's not a bad idea, but it might be weird. I think we should go to a more public place and hang out first." I say back.
"How about for ice cream and walk around the village?" Victoria suggests.
"That sounds perfect!" I type it into my screen and soon he agrees. We decide on meeting at the ice cream place at 5:30.
"AHHH I can't handle it! You guys are adorable!" Victoria shouts.
"I knowww!" Erin shouts back. The doorbell rings and the pizza we ordered arrives. Wow. My life is so great right now. A boyfriend (kind of?), pizza, and my two best friends. Now I have something to look forward to. I already start thinking of the scenarios we might encounter on our date. I'm going on a date with Spencer. This doesn't feel real.
