"God, it's cold in here." Chris thought as she laid quietly in her hospital bed. The room was dark and the only thing that could be heard was crickets from outside of her window. The silence was painful. To drown it out, Chris hummed. No tune in particular, just enough to break the silence. But it didn't work. Chris was scared.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, a nurse came into her room bringing light with her in the form of the door opening. It wasn't too bright, but it was enough. "Miss Higgins, you should be asleep... It's late and you've just been through a traumatic experience." The nurse said trying to sound comforting. She sat down beside Chris on the bed.
"It's just the silence.. I can't handle it. And my parents? When are my parents coming?" Chris asked. The nurse hesitated for a second, and looked to the floor, until she finally responded while fiddling around with her shirt button. "Miss Higgins, we haven't been able to reach your parents. Do you have any idea where they were before you went with your friends?"
Chris remembered that her parents were going to visit her fathers side of the family for a few days. "They're visiting with my dads family for a few days. They should be back by now. What number did you call them from?" Chris asked worriedly. Again, the nurse thought for a second. Chris could tell that she was keeping something from her.
"We called your house. 902-530-9996?" The nurse responded, confident in her answer. Chris reached to the bag on the table beside her. After a second of digging, she found a leather skinned book labelled "Chris". After flipping through a few pages, she found the page she was looking for. She traced her finger over a phone number. "Yeah, that's the right number." Chris responded.
"I'm sure they just got caught in a bad storm or something. They'll be back before you know it." The nurse said as cheerfully as possible. Chris wasn't so sure. "I hope so." Chris whispered back to herself. The nurse then left the room and silence filled it once again. All she could do was remember.
A couple hours later, a couple of the nurses were outside having a smoke break. "So, what happened to that girl and her friends?" One nurse asked. "Her friends were butchered and she was attacked by some maniac." The other nurse responded. "Poor kid..." She said as she took a puff on her cigarette. "What happened to the maniac?" She asked. "Oh, he disappeared from the crime scene. They're thinking some sicko took the body. He had an ax in his head. He couldn't have walked away from that.." The nurse responded. The two finished their smoke break and went back inside.
It was 3:36 AM now. All but a few of the nurses and doctors were at home. Chris finally managed to fall asleep. She was startled awake by a nightmare shortly after dozing off. She took her face out of her pillow and realized the door was open. Chris took her legs out from under the covers and laid her bare feet on the cold floor. She stood up with whatever strength she could and walked to the doorway. As she was closing the door, she saw blood. Blood everywhere. All of the nurses...dead. Chris panicked and slammed the door, locking it behind her.
Chris ran back to her bed as fast as she could and hid behind it. "No...no... He's coming back for me!" She thought. All of a sudden, the sound of footsteps could be heard in the hallway. Everything else was quiet. She dropped to the floor as she heard the creaking of the door. It was Jason from what she could tell. Jason looked around the room, blood still dripping from his head, but only a little. He pulled his head out of the room and closed the door quietly and continued walking.
Chris saw her chance and she took it. She bolted for the window with all her strength and opened it. She struggled lifting it up for her to have enough room to wiggle out. Jason stopped dead in his tracks. He looked around and surveyed the area for a second, and then turned around and looked at the door from which he came from. He slowly walked to the door and tried to open it. It was locked. With all of his strength he smashed down the door after a couple good hits to it. The window was open and Chris was gone.
It's late afternoon now and Chris is still running. Her hospital gown is soaked from head to toe and full of mud. She has scratches on her legs from thorns and tree sap in her hair. She ran until she couldn't anymore. She laid against a big tree and relaxed for what seemed like forever. Her legs felt like they'd been run over or beaten with a 2x4. After taking a few minutes to catch her breath, she continued running at a steady pace.
Chris finally found her way out of the woods and into the road. After a few minutes of walking along it with no luck, she heard a vehicle approaching from behind her. She turned around to see a blue station wagon driving along. As it passed, she saw Gordon with his head out of the window and his tongue out. Chris weakly put up her hand and stuck up her thumb, hoping for them to stop. The station wagon came to a complete halt a few feet in front of her and reversed back to her position.
Chris sighed with relief. "Hey, are you okay?" Trish asked worriedly. "I am now..." Chris weakly responded. "Tommy, let her in." Trish yelled back to Tommy. He opened up his door and let Chris in and they were off.
