“So...what’s up?” I asked, setting down my iced caramel macchiato on the black table in between Greg and I and peering at him with curiosity.

It was around seven o’clock and we were sitting together at Starbucks, just like we’d agreed on earlier in the day. As it was the middle of October, the sun had already set, plunging the town into an abyss of inky blackness, and shrouding the little streets with an eerie shadow.

Greg took a sip of his coffee, setting it down next to mine and grinning, leaning forward in his seat slightly.

“I just wanted to talk.” He said simply, shooting me a grin.

“About...?” I trailed off, giving him a look of amusement.

He grinned at me for a moment, peering at me in a surveying manner. After a moment, he spoke. “Did you have fun on Saturday with me? At the lake?” He asked.

Alright, so evidently he didn’t want to answer my question.

Cool.

I paused for a moment, feeling a small smile begin to form on my face. “Yes, I did...” I said slowly, trailing off and giving him a slightly wary look.

“What would you consider that?” He asked.

I wrinkled my eyebrows slightly. “What do you mean?” I asked in reply.

He shrugged. “Would you consider it just...two friends who happen to be boy and girl just meeting up and hanging out, or would you consider it to be something...different?”

“And by ‘different’, you mean...?”

Greg paused for a moment, smiling at me. “I dunno, like...a date?”

I raised my eyebrows, slightly caught off guard.

“Well...” I managed to stutter after a few moments. “Um...I’m not sure. What would you consider it?”

Greg was silent, obviously thinking about it like I had. Finally, he shrugged. “I guess I would kind of consider it to be a date.”

My eyebrows rose, if possible, even further.

I was shocked.

But in a tingly-feeling-in-your-toes, good type of shocked, not the ‘Holy shitsnaps, where did that come from?’ type.

“Only if you would, too.” Greg added quickly, his voice anxious. He had evidently mistaken my facial expression to be the latter type of shocked.

I quickly shook my head. “No, no, no, I definitely would, too.” I replied. “I just didn’t want to say something and then have it come out all wrong or be the opposite of what you were thinking, or be really-” I rambled awkwardly.
