Ch. 26

A Fork in the Road

A loud horn blared as I entered the arena, glancing around as I did so.

It was the day of one of Ryan's biggest hockey games of the season, and I had promised him I would go.

Thus, here Natasha, Greg, and I were, filing into the stands of the ice rink and trying to scope out any empty seats.

The stands were practically filled due to the fact that the game was against Stratford Secondary's rival, Ridgeview Secondary.

Stratford and Ridgeview's rivalry went way back, and students from the opposing schools loathed one another.

This game was a big deal.

Stratford had lost for the last three years, which only increased the pressure on the athletes and made the spectators antsy.

I could only hope it wouldn't get too nasty on the ice.

We all know what happened the last time Ryan got in a fight...

He ended up in the hospital and was out for three weeks on injury.

This game happened to be his first game back after his recovery, so I couldn't help but feel even more nervous than usual.

He needed to play well and obviously he wanted to help his team win, but there was no telling how he'd perform on the ice after being absent from it for such an extended period of time.

"Over there." Natasha stated suddenly, pointing a finger towards the far left side of the stands.

She nodded her head once before motioning for us to follow her as she bolted off down the row.

Greg and I glanced at one another before we pursued her in her wake, taking care not to tread on the feet of anyone in the first row or cause any unnecessary spillage of beverages.

When we arrived at the row of seats that Natasha had pointed out to us, the three of us sat down, peering down at the ice with interest.

Natasha began biting her fingernails, crossing her legs tightly and staring at where several members of Stratford's team were warming up.

"For some reason," She said, glancing around wildly. "Hockey games make me really nervous."

Greg let out a chuckle. "Ryan's graceful little accident probably didn't help that."

I turned to give him a look.
