Close Calls

I leaned my head back against the couch, pressing the phone to my ear and sighing.

"I just don't know, guys. I mean...I really, really like her." I stated emphatically. "And I just...I feel like I could be losing her."

I was sitting in my living room talking to my three best friends from back home in Vancouver, Sarah, Seth, and Cecilia.

"Well, why do you feel that way?" Sarah asked curiously, her airy voice floating through the phone.

I shrugged. "I dunno. I just...get a feeling."

"Hmm..." Seth murmured discontentedly.

"Has she been acting weird or something?" Cecilia asked.

"Kinda." I admitted. "See...the thing is...I just feel like she's been distancing herself from me. I don't really understand why, but...it's scaring me."

It was true. I'd been noticing it ever since that night we got in a fight and she proclaimed she wanted to take a break, up until last night at the hockey game, when she'd disappeared for ages and come back all flustered.

I just felt like we'd been growing apart.

And I didn't like it.

What happened to the days when she was so wonderfully enthralled by me? The days when our relationship was so carefree and fun and...well...happy?

It didn't make sense.

"I just get a weird vibe. Ever since she yelled at me at that party, she's been acting...different." I admitted.

"Well..." Sarah began tentatively. "Maybe she's still kinda...upset."

"Why would she be upset still?" I asked quickly. "I mean, we talked about it. We talked about everything, we worked things out! Why would she still be mad?"

Sarah gave a small laugh. "I don't know, Greg! I'm just saying, it's a possibility."

"Well, what do you think, Seth?"

"Uh..." Seth's voice came. "Bro, I'm a dude. I don't know what the hell goes through chick's minds, I wouldn't know."

I exhaled irritably. "Ce? How about you?"

"I mean..." Cecilia began tentatively. "I kind of agree with Sarah, yeah. It's a possibility."

I buried my face in my hands then, letting out an anxious and miserable groan.
