Lacey & Periods

"If you make me hang out with Jace again, you're going to wake up bald tomorrow morning." I said when I sat myself at the dining table, in front of a very sleep deprived Luke with his head just inches away from dipping into the cereal bowl.

Luke lifted his head, making it look too heavy to fit on his shoulders. He blinked once and then twice before yawning. Luke didn't even say anything but continuously shoved milk into his mouth.

"Good morning to you too." He muttered, milk dribbling off his chin.

I made a face, my nose scrunching up as I poured in a decent amount of Lucky Charms into my bowl, "God, what does Sophia see in you?"

"A sex god." Luke shot back, flashing me a half-assed, tired smile.

"Hey, eat properly." Mom smacked the back of his head lightly. She sat herself down, sipping on her coffee, "And if we're talking about anything that revolves around sexual intercourse, please don't. I'm too young to be a grandmother."

"Duly noted." Luke and I chorused as we focused on our cereal, diverting from any incoming sex talk from our parents.

"How are things, kids?" Dad's loud voice boomed into the dining area. He had walked in, wearing his usual suit and tie, except the tie wasn't properly tied around his collar as per usual.

"Fine." I answered for all of us as he walked over and kissed each of our heads, even Luke's but he was quick to swat him away. Dad rolled his eyes and sat himself across mom, reaching for a piece of toast that was stacked in the middle of the table.

I shot my eyes at Luke's direction, "I mean, it'd be fine if Luke could just not force a friendship on me."

Luke snorted, "It isn't my idea. It's Soph's."

"Soph's." I mimicked his deep voice bitterly, folding my arms across my chest, "Look at you. Calling my best friend Soph."

"Oh, honey." Mom tutted, shaking her head at me. "Why can't you be happy for your brother?"

I was speechless. Mom was super oblivious. Why the hell? She was shooting me one of those typical Mom Looks with her lips pursed and her eyes softly drilling into mine.

I trusted her, the woman who gave birth to me, to tell me things but when I found out she knew about Sophia and Luke – as well as dad, the man who caught me when I fell from my bike – I was questioning if this family was built on shaky foundation.

"Mom, we're talking about Sophia and Luke." I drawled out clearly, "Sophia and I used to play princess out in the backyard when we were eight and now I catch her swapping spit with my brother! My twin brother, by the way! That's like dating me!"

"Oh build a bridge and get over it!" Luke groaned annoyedly, throwing a piece of burnt toast at my face.

I gasped and chucked the piece back at him, which bounced off his forehead and plopped into the soggy bowl of cereal in front of him.

"Lacey's got a point." Dad spoke up, his voice slightly muffled with a mouthful of toast. He sipped his coffee and wagged his finger at Luke, who was looking at him in disbelief.

Usually, dad would take Luke's side because they were pretty much a genetic copy of each other. They both liked sports, hiking and whatever else while I was more like mom who was more into spending time by herself. She saw herself in me so she would instinctively took my side if any arguments blew up like this.
