"I don't get it." Jace said, cocking his head to the side at the TV screen.

I smiled lightly at the look of him. We were watching The Breakfast Club after baking the brownies and the credits just started rolling. We were in the extra room in the back of the house, which was supposed to be the guest house but dad had it converted into a movie theatre. He has always been a junkie for movies. In fact, he worked at the movie theatre the summer before he went to college.

"What don't you get?" I asked, leaning out of the couch to retrieve the bowl of caramel popcorn before snuggling back into the couch, drowning myself in the soft, furry blanket and throw pillows.

Jace scratched the back of his head. "That's it? They just leave detention as new people? All of them falling in love?"

I chuckled, shoving more popcorn into my mouth. "It's more to it than just that. They all came as different, contradicting people - the nerd, the athlete, the delinquent - and they all judged each other without really knowing them. It's all about realization. In the end, they realized there was nothing about each other that caused all these unnecessary hatred or dislike."

Silence is all I got. But when I turned my head, checking if he had fallen asleep to my lame explanation of an 80s coming-of-age movie, Jace was actually looking at me. The way he looked at me pulled at my heart for a bit. It wasn't an unknown fact that Jace had always been one of those Handsome Boys. But then again, those Handsome Boys always knew how to make you feel special with just one look.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" I shyly asked, hiding my face with the bowl of popcorn.

"Are we having our realization?" Jace answered with a question. I raised a brow slightly, as a response to the playful glint in his eyes. He was acting way too cool; he was splayed with his tailbone almost at the edge of the couch and his shirt untidy.

Snorting, I shoved his shoulder. "What? About each other?"

"Yeah." He smiled widely, "Tell me, Lacey Baris. Are we finally realizing that we can actually tolerate each other?"

I laughed, incredulously. I just never thought that after all these years we would go to each other. Perhaps we had no other choice but to seek assurance and friendship in each other since our best friends are now dating, having little time for us.

"Yeah, I guess you're not that bad," I said, sighing softly.

Jace Hermann wasn't so bad after all.

"I don't think it's a good idea to get drunk on a school night." I giggled, squinting at the glass of some random concoction in my hand.

"Oh, no. It's a very, very good idea to get drunk on a school night." Jace argued, slurring on his words. "I have trig tomorrow morning and there is no way I can pull through being sober."

We were sitting on the flat rooftop of my house, having an impromptu stargazing session with a jug of random stuff we found in the cellar. My parents kept a bunch of imported alcohol down there. They would only take them out for special occasions but I guess mine and Jace's boredom was an occasion that needed them direly. Plus, they were off at their friend's house so Jace and I figured why not just take a little bit out of some bottles and create a monstrous concoction that we could only enjoy.
