1) Major Depression / Clinical Depression
The main type of depression one might get, a sad mood that lasts more than two weeks, a major depressive mood--almost never ending with some happy moments. There are different subtypes of major depression.
a) Atypical--of social rejection, often associated with weight loss or gain/insomnia
b) Post partum-- after giving birth, a woman may feel this depression
c) Catatonic-- a serious type where the victim can barely speak or move
d) Seasonal-- where you are only affected depending on the season
e) Melancholic-- of guilt or remorse, feeling less pleasure in things used to be liked
2) Bipolar Depression
Another common type of depression one may have, resulting in many mixed moods, often appearing happy, masking the depression; one may not even know they have it, as some don't experience low moods, going about their days oblivious. They have three "episodes":
a) Manic-- they are estatic, hyper, needing less sleep, short attention span
b) Hypermanic-- increase in creativity, like manic, but more subdued
c) Mixed-- one minute manic, the other, low moods.
3) Dysthymic Depression
It goes unnoticed manny times due to the fact that the victim thinks it's part of their persona rather than a disease. To have dysthymia, your symptoms must go two years without being broken. Symptoms include:
a) Insomnia, lack of sleep every day
b) Sad, less severe than major depression.
c) Problems with concentration
d) Loss of enjoyment in things / feeling of guilt
4) Less Common--Endogenous, Situational, and Psychotic
These are three less common types of depression.
a) Endogenous-- from internal causes, like stress and worry
b) Situational-- only experienced during different situations, not in others
c) Psychotic-- where one may also have hallucinations, delusions accompanied with mood swings
