The kiss broke.

Was it a kiss?

As soon as his breath wasn't grazing her face, his lips long gone, the cold and dry darkness returned to her.

Was it a kiss?

Mark stared at (Y/N),then he turned away, looking down. His fists, they were clenched, and he felt ashamed. He shouldn't. He couldn't. He...

"And then you'll forget all over again..." Mark said silently, laughing with cracks in his voice and taking off his glasses to wipe his eyes. His cheeks were shining. They were tears.

Was it a lie?

"What do you mean I'll forget again? Mark, tell me please. Please?" (Y/N) said, wanting to pull him into her embrace, but the kiss it... it electrified her entire being... it slapped her face... it made her feel so...

"I'm sorry, (Y/N), I'll talk to you some other time... I... but if you want to know and need someone to ask... ask Sean. He... he knows. I'm... a little busy." Mark said, before flashing her a smile, like his old ones she would remember, but everything he did seemed so broken, so small, so terrified, so painful, it made her feel so...

Was everything a lie?

"Okay. I'll see you again?" (Y/N) asked, not daring to meet his eyes.

"Okay." Mark said, but (Y/N) didn't see, because there was no way that she could, but behind his back his fingers were crossed. There would not be a next time.

Was everything a fraud?

(Y/N) nodded slowly, and she silently made her way towards the door and opened it. She took a step outside, and gasped slightly when Mark appeared, as if teleported, in front of her when she turned around to look at him one last time.

"I'll see you out the door." he said. (Y/N) smiled a little, but only because she was trying to hide her emotions, because she didn't want Mark to see how much she was breaking inside to see him... like this.

Was everything gone?

She turned, but she stopped to whisper one last goodbye before she was about to take a step away.

"Wait." Mark said urgently, grabbing her wrist and pulling her to his warm chest. He buried his face into her neck, eyes closed and face burning. He would miss her, yes, but she would be back, as always. She always came back.

"Goodbye."

(Y/N) blushed, her eyes wide open. There was something different, his tone sounded so sad, still, but he sounded so much more sincere. Like he was saying goodbye, and it broke his soul but he was ready to let her go. Like he meant it. Like she meant something to him.

Was it a dream?

"I need to tell you something. Even though, I... can't tell you everything... but I can tell you something." Mark said, not making sense to (Y/N). He pulled away from her, his eyes brown but had a certain greyness like the others. He sighed, holding on to her hand.

Was it pain?

"Sean... he loves you, you know? He really does. Since we were kids he... he's been in love with you. You're going to forget, but that's okay. I'll always be here, awaiting your next visit, and you'll ask me the same questions, but that's okay. It's always been okay. I just wished you'd... never mind. Goodbye (Y/N), Sean is probably worried. It's one, so his lunch already ended. Wait around his office if you want to find him okay? I have to go." Mark said.
