No no no no NO.
It took her two times for her message to get across. Karma is coming over NOW and staying OVERNIGHT.
This cannot, CAN-FRICKING-NOT get any worse.
Ding dong!
And it just did. "I'll go get it!" I yelled across the room as I scampered to the door, opening it up without even hearing my mother reply.
Yep, it's the sadist of the century. "Yo, Nagisa. Long time no see, especially with no 'project' assigned to us this time."
"Why the heck is everyone using air quotes now?"
"Huh?"
"Nevermind that, just get in here," I whispered loudly while grabbing his arm and pulling him in. He seemed a little confused but obliged anyway.
After I closed the door with a mighty force and looked to see if I broke anything during the process, he gazed down at my hand again. "You still have that number?"
I gulped. "Uh, y-yeah," my voice managed to breath out.
He sighed, bringing his hand up to his face. "You really should just erase that now." Yep, he was a little annoyed.
"Later, but you need to listen to me now." That got his attention quick. "My mom... well, sh-she kinda, makes this joke about me being a girl. So she's gonna call me that a lot."
Karma scoffed while placing his hand on my shoulder. "Me and Rio make fun of you all the time, I don't see why you need to warn me about something like this, Nagisa."
I unknowingly clenched my hands into fists, not even in anger or anxiety just, clenched. "N-No. She goes to a point where she's not even joking. She acts like I am a girl, not the way you do or even Rio."
His hand seemed to flinch. He probably felt me shaking. "What?"
"But it doesn't bother me! It's just, if you hear her calling me that, just know that's how she is and it doesn't affect me in any way, shape, or form. Okay?" I took hold of his hand, the one that was on my shoulder. He seemed hesitant to oblige this time but soon did.
His ombre yellow eyes didn't stare at me directly, giving me the feeling he was lying.
"Sure."
I smiled happily nevertheless. "That's nice, now let's go have an early dinner!" I grabbed the wrist that was on my shoulder and dragged him to meet my mom face to face. He immediately put on a proper smirk that wasn't as devious as his normal resting one.
My mom turned from her noodle-making to face us. At that point, I released my grip on my redheaded friend. "Why, it's been so long since I've seen you Karma!"
"You too Miss Shiota, how was life while I was busy not doing projects with Nagisa?" They seem to get along quite nicely, that's actually a really pleasant surprise.
She giggled at his funny comment, not even acknowledging my existence. "It's been just fine! I mean it would be better if my pretty little daughter would talk about you more often, but I've learned to cope with it plenty."
Karma's eyebrows twitched, luckily I told him beforehand. Or else his protective nature would probably sprout from his normal and calm demeanor.
Lunch was pretty embarrassing. Karma was pretty close to ripping the tablecloth he was gripping on so he wouldn't show his discomfort on his face. He made it though. And I just can't wait for the sea of questions to come flooding in after my mom sets up the air matress for him.
We were both in my room and on my bed, shoulder to shoulder, as my mom struggled to bring in the extra bed and was still downstairs.
"Soooo, your mom-"
"Don't, just don't even bring her up. Sh-She does this pretty often so don't even worry about it," I leaned on his shoulder while struggling to lie to him.
He cradled my head with his arm around my neck and his hand on my cheek. "No, not that. She didn't really even talk to you like a normal parent should to their kid's friend.... Now that I think about it, I don't really think she asked you permission to talk about the private stuff she did say." He moved his hand to rub my shoulder in a really comforting way.
"That's normal as well, Karma." I smiled calmly. "Don't worry about it alright?"
This time he leaned his head on mine so it was kinda stacked. I looked at the cabinet in my room, which had a reflective surface on it.
Yeah, I guess my mom was kinda right. We do kinda look like a couple in this position. For some reason, I smiled at the thought. Must look pretty creepy I must admit.
Literally right after, he leaned down on my bed, bringing me down with him since he had his hand on my shoulder. "Your bed's comfy."
"Thanks, I guess?" This may sound weird, but he smells just incredibly different when he's in my bed. It's more, distinctive, for sure. "Did you bring some sleeping clothes?"
He sighed and turned his head to me, pretty much looking down at me. "Nah, I'm just fine sleeping like this. Plus your clothes wouldn't fit me anyway."
"You sure?"
"Mm, yeah..." he seemed sure at least, couldn't really say for certain though. "Nagisa?"
I tensed up for a bit. "Y-Yeah?"
Even if it was for a second, I felt him tense up as well. "Don't listen to what Okuda said to you, okay?"
What. What.
As a reflex I pushed him off me and sat back up, my heart racing immensely now. I laughed it off. "Boy, that was a compromising position we were in!" I stood on my feet and turned off the light, only the sunset from the window illuminating the room and allowing us to meet eye to eye.
"You're awfully up tight."
"I-I think it's time to go to sleep now, Karma!" Without thinking I jumped back in the bed, laying tensed right next to the redhead. Pleeeeaaaase stop talking, that'd be wonderful!
He let out a heavy breath while laying back down on the bed, next to the wall. "It's not even 7:00 o'clock yet."
I pretended to be asleep to avoid talking to him.
Karma chuckled to himself. That was never ever a good sign for anything. "Fine then, suit yourself you little liar." Without any warning he scuffled on the bed so he'd face me. I could tell that's what he did even with my eyes closed 'cause his breath was draped on my neck. He smirked, lips curling so close I felt it. "Night night then, Nagisa."
The way he said my voice was just, weird. Like he was trying to seduce me in my own BED.
I tried my damn hardest to kept myself from squinting as a reaction. Pretty sure I was heating up quickly though, so that was for nothing. Even so, I clenched my fists tightly.
I was surprised to feel him grab my hand under the blanket though. He had a gentle grip this time, allowing me to rest my hand in his. My blush started to fade away as I was finally getting relaxed, almost really falling asleep in my peaceful room.
Karma's a form of therapy to me, in a way.
That's why I never wanted him to hate me when I was okay with everyone else doing so. I'm... glad he stood up for me.
He intertwined our fingers so we'd fall asleep that way. "Doesn't matter if the whole class hates us together, I'll stay friends with you for as long as I live, buddy."
Yeah, friends. That's what I wanted. That's, how it was suppose to end for guys.
Just friends. Best friends for that matter.
Yeah, f-friends only.
__________Spoiler, they won't stay just friends. I know a shocker right.
I just can't get over this stupid title though, XD.
