Chapter 18

I watched as Ava stormed out of the cafeteria

I watched as Ava stormed out of the cafeteria. Frustrated with the outcome of everything. First the kiss that Ava had wanted to forget. I would never forget that kiss. It seems as though I was cursed thinking about that forsaken kiss every second of every day.

And now Ava didn't even want to go to prom with me as friends. I know I had said that I didn't want to go with anyone, but that was only because I wanted to get a reaction out of Ava. Which hadn't worked her face was a closed book that I couldn't read. This had me quite frustrated.

Sarah and Zoe left a second later arguing about how inconsiderate Zoe was. I was glad that they were going after Ava she seemed to be in need of some friends right about now. As soon as the girls were gone Chase and Nate moved closer to me and I knew I was in for a long talk.

"Why did you say you didn't want to go to prom with anyone? You know you want to and everyone knows exactly who you want to go with." Nate stats accusingly staring at me meaningfully.

"It was stupid okay? Lets just forget about it." Thats all I wanted to do, forget about it. I never wanted to talk about what had accrued this lunch.

"We can forget about it, but Ava will defiantly never forget about it. You hurt her Ryder and thats not fair to her. We know you were just being stupid but she doesn't know that and she thinks that you really don't want her." That must have been the smartest thing Chase has said all day. But it only left me infuriated with myself and even more curious.

"Why would she even want me to take her to prom? Last night she told me that she wanted to forget that special kiss we shared. She doesn't like me." There eyes widened.

"You really don't know?" Nate exclaims, shock filtered through his voice.

"Know what?" My face screwed up in curiosity.

"She likes you Ryder. She's liked you for a while and thats why she doesn't have a date, she's been waiting for someone else. Im sure any guy would be ready to ask her out. But she waited for you because she hoped you liked her. And she probably only told you that she wanted to forget the kiss because she was testing you just like you were earlier today." Man my friends were smarter then I gave them credit for. "You know what you need to do? You need to go ask her out for prom."

"Are you sure she'll say yes?" I ask a little doubtful.

Chase grabs me by the shoulders and shakes me while both of them yell: "Yes!"

After the last bell rang I was a nervous wreck. And I never get nervous. But here I was, about to do the scariest thing I could imagine, well at least in the moment. I was about to ask Ava to the prom.

It wasn't going to be anything special. It was supposed to be casual. After stopping at my locker and leaving all of my books inside I walked towards Ava's locker where I knew she would be. The closer I got the more apprehensive I felt. Were my friends telling me the truth? Did Ava really want to go to the prom with me. The notion seemed crazy.

I could see her standing there with a frown on her beautiful face talking to her friends. I walk up to her and tap her on the shoulder. "Hey Ava." I say, placing a smile on my face. Her eyes lit up and a grin formed on her face. "Can I talk to you for a second? Privately?" She nodded and then turned to her friends and said a quick goodbye to them. Which gave me just enough time to prepare myself.

"So Ava I kind of lied at lunch I actually wanted to go with someone." I glance at her face and see a line appear between her brows.

"Oh" She says sounding disappointed which makes me wonder once again whether she actually wants me to ask her out or not.

"Well I was thinking we could go together? You know, you'll be my date and stuff. It would be fun." I sound like an idiot. I watch her face intently trying to figure out how she really feels about what I had just said. Her whole face lit up, her eyes went big and she bit her lip. Maybe they were right.

"Like friends?" Thats not really what I meant but if thats how she wants thats how it'll be. At least we'll be going together and spending time together. Even though I won't be able to hold her hand or kiss her.

"Sure something like that." A frown flickers across her features before a lopsided grin graces her face.

"Alright so Ill see you tomorrow Ryder." She waves before turning around and walking towards the exit where Im sure her friends are waiting for her.

I stand there thinking about how much of a disappointment this turn of events were.

❧❧❧

"Ryder what did you do?" I was chilling around my room when Nate had called. I had contemplating everything that had happened in the last month or so.

"What do you mean? I really haven't done anything all day. It was a really lazy day."

"Does telling Ava that you want to go to prom with her only was friends ring a bell?"

"Oh" How could he possibly know what happened earlier today?

"Yeah oh, what were you thinking? You like her and she likes you." I wanted to argue with him and say that she defiantly didn't like me that way, but he didn't give me the chance. "You need to tell her how you feel, be the man. Stop being a stupid coward. You like her and you want her so tell her that. You'll solve a lot of problems that way."

"Are you done insulting me yet? And how did you find out that we are going as friends?"

"Yeah I am. I found out when Sarah came over to hang out with me after a long day of counciling Ava about your stupid self. Apparently she was extremely upset. She thought that you had finally manned up and decided to ask her out. But clearly that didn't happen. So good going dude."

"Is Sarah telling you what to say? And what am I supposed to do now?"

"Yeah she is but it doesn't make it anymore untrue or unimportant. And now your supposed to wait until prom so you can tell her how you really feel. It'll be sweet and she will defiantly appreciate the gesture." I laugh at what he just said.

"I can't believe you just said that, you are so whipped." I wished I had that right now. I wish Ava was here with me telling me what to do. It really didn't matter what we were doing as long as we were together.

"Whatever bro" He abruptly hangs up, leaving me to contemplate what I was going to do.
