TRIGGER WARNING

"Hi mom!," She shouted as she skipped to the kitchen, her rainboots— it wasn't raining at all, she just liked wearing them— squeaking. Once she was right by the stovetop, her mom gave her a quick smile and went back to whatever she was making.

"That smells really good," she said, trying to break the awkwardness. "Thank you, love. Go set out the plates and we can eat once this is done." She nodded once and grabbed the pink stool that was beside the sink and set it down just right by the plates. She climbed on it and grabbed three of them with her small, albeit strong hands.

Just as she was setting down the spoons, the door slammed and the strong scent of booze started wafting through the dim studio apartment. She looked up in fear.

***

She was on the verge of crying. The deep red liquid pooled around her rainboots as the grown woman shakily said to the 911 officer, "Send an ambulance."

"LULA!" Jack screamed one last time as Lula finally woke up & sat up straight, her face all pale and scared.

Jack immediately pulled her into his arms, resting her head on his left shoulder, as he rubbed small circles and whispered thousands of millions "it's okay"s in her ear.

Lula had started sobbing into his white pajama shirt and wrapped her arms around his waist. Hearing the sobbing getting more and more stronger, Jack adjusted their position so they were both leaning on the headboard, her still wrapped up in his arms, and him still whispering "it's okay"s and "you're fine"s.

After a while her crying had slowed down and the sobbing had turned into sniffling. Jack finally inched her face up so they were meeting their eyes. Softly, the words barely even coming out, he whispered, "Do you wanna talk about it?"

***

Jack helped Lula to the big couch in the living room— he had insisted that Lula stay wrapped up in his blanket so now she looked like a walking-on-two-legs caterpillar— and set her down softly and inmediately went to the kitchen and poured her a cup of water.

He gave the cup to Lula who weakly brought the rim of the cup of to her lips and sipped the lukewarm clear liquid, all while Jack looked at her sympathetically. He knew exactly what she was dreaming about, and he knew to just... stay silent.

They sat there on the couch quietly, Lula leaning her head on the hazel eyed man's shoulder as she was just deep in thought.

She nudged her head up ever so slightly so she could see the man, and just as she hoped, he faced her. Feeling a movement, Jack looked down and smiled softly.

"There she is. The crazy dove lady," he softly spoke, using Merritt's nickname for the brunette. He planted a small peck on her lips and once again, softly spoke,"What do you wanna do now?"

"Let's just go back to sleep. Dylan's probably going to wake us up early in the morning & make us accompany him while he does Eye stuff."
Jack nodded and stood up slowly, then picking her up bridal-style and brought her to the room. As he set her down, Lula gave another peck and mouthed "Thank you."
