Eleven was still feeling weird around Mike. It was like she didn't want to be around him, but also she itched to be with him. She was in her own confusing mind and it was making her angry; she didn't know what she wanted. She decided she would give Mike a try today. Even though she kinda wanted to be alone. After all, she's been alone her whole life; it's what she's used to.
She got dressed in a pastel pink pleaded skirt with a white turtle neck. Her socks had ruffles at the seem where they stopped at her ankles. She looked at her dresser to see a pile of unopened jewelry sprawled out over the surface. She picked up a bracelet that she picked out, and ran her finger over the engraved word.
"Promise." She whispers to herself. She puts it on and heads downstairs to the kitchen. She's in a pretty good mood, fortunately. She twirls around and her skirt flares up. She giggles and touches the fabric with her finger tips. She places Eggos in the toaster and hops up on the counter, like she had seen Mike do. Mike walks into the kitchen, groggy and messy-haired. He rubs his eye and smiles softly at Eleven. She gives him a small smile back. Mike notices he bracelet on her wrist and he shuffles over to her. He picks up her hand that was resting on the counter and examines it. He twists the bracelet around to see the word 'promise' written on it. He smiles wide and looks at her. She stares at him and both of her eyes dart back and fourth between both of his eyes. He bows in and kisses her softly while she's still sitting on the counter. He manages to stand between her legs so he could get closer to her. His hand rests on her thigh and he grips it a little. She jumps slightly because his hands were cold and she was warm. What they both don't see is a shook Karen, watching their every move. Her mouth hangs open and she can't even muster up words to yell. Mike sees her in the corner of his eye and he does a double take.
"Mom! I—" he can't even finish his sentence before Karen is dragging him out of the kitchen by his ear. Eleven slides of the counter and brushes off her skirt. She holds the Eggos in each of her hands, waiting for Karen to come back. Eleven is terrified because she thinks she's in trouble. Karen comes back down stairs and keeps a safe distance from Eleven. She folds her arms and looks El up and down.
"Mike is grounded. You will see him at dinner tonight, and that's the only time you'll see him." She grabbed her keys and purse and stormed out of the house. Eleven squinted her eyes when the door slammed shut. She still stood in the middle of the kitchen, crying and eating Eggos at the same time. She thought she was in big trouble. She looked at her bracelet once more before blinking hard, letting streams of tears down her face.
Mike paced in his room, wondering if he should just leave. He wiggled the door handle: locked. He was worried Eleven would leave, or be upset or something. He sat on the ground in front of the door, waiting for Eleven to possibly walk by.
He waited a good hour before Eleven walked by his room. She got bored and decided she would look at more of the jewelry she had bought. But she was stopped when she heard Mikes voice faintly through the door.
"El! Don't go!" He whisper yelled. He could see under the door that she had stopped. She crouched down onto her shins and looked under the door. She could only see his crossed legs. She sat against the door and tapped on it, letting him know she was there. He sprung up quickly and rummaged through his dresser. He found a blue note card and a black pen. He sat back in front of the door and scribbled a message on it, and slid it under the door with he pen.
"I miss you" the note read. El picked up the paper and wrote a message back.
"I miss you too Mike." She slid it under the door and Mike examined the note. He loved the way she wrote her name. He decided he was going to keep this piece of paper. Maybe frame it. He didn't know yet. He hunched over and wrote something else on the back of the paper.
"Can you sing for me?" Eleven smiled when she read the message. At first, Mike thought she declined because it was silent for a while. He then heard her change positions and begin to sing "Eyes Without A Face" by Billy Idol. Her voice was tranquil and utterly authentic. Mike leaned his head on the door frame and just gave his undivided attention to her voice. He was getting choked up hearing her say all those words. Sure he has heard her voice but he's never heard her voice. She knew every line and seemed to know what it meant too. Mike shakes his head and thinks.
Ive found myself crying over this girl more than once.
Eleven finishes and Mike has no words. He is painstakingly in love with her and he's going crazy. He scribbled words on the note card and slides it under the door. Eleven holds it close to her face and covers her mouth, trying to hide her smile.
Eleven, that was without a doubt the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
Mike received the note card from under the door.
Without a doubt, I love you lots and lots.
Mike stood up and placed the paper on his dresser, hanging it up with the other pictures he has of his friends.
They sat with a wall between them for nearly 2 hours. Making sounds, giggling, and whispering little nothing's under the door. Nancy's door opened and it scared Eleven. She looked at Mikes door and pulled a Bobby pin out of her hair. She unlocked the door and pushed it open.
"Don't worry," she smirked. "I'll warn you when mom gets home." She simply walked back into her room and shut the door. Eleven peered into Mikes room, where Mike sits on the ground, staring at where the door once was closed. They looked at each other, and immediately started laughing. They both stand up, and Mike yanked Eleven in his room, closing the door once they were both inside.
"Without a doubt, I love you lots and lots."
