It was late afternoon and the only thing we'd done all day is chill out. I mean, I wasn't complaning but I had the feeling to get up and move around; maybe go exploring in the woods another day.
I was in my bathing suit, out by the pool, getting a tan, and Wes started moving.
"Where ya going, babe?" Maci asked him. I shuddered at the pet name. No matter how cute they are, I can't get over it. I hate babe, honey, sweetie, anything. You name it, I hate it. But, to each their own, right? I took off my sunglasses to see, but quickly squinted my eyes because of the sun.
"I'm gonna go start cutting wood for the fire tonight." He was walking around the corner when Tyler popped up.
"I'll help you." He sprung out of his chair and ran around the corner, following Wes.
Now that there were no boys around, Maci and I could talk.
"It's so much better with them not here." I heard her tell me.
"You can say that again." I agreed, putting my sunglasses back on.
"So, Rave. I have something to tell you." I look over at her and lift my sunglasses up just a little.
"Oh god, what is it?" I asked, expecting something terrible.
"I know what you, Wes and Tyler are. I've always known." My eyebrows raised and I just looked at her. I was surprised, but I figured she'd know sooner or later, Wes was bound to tell her.
"Oh." Was the very clever response I came up with.
"Yeah, I've known cause I'm a lycan, too." This time, I was truly surprised. I was not expecting that at all.
"Oh!"
"The only time I ever changed was when I was little. Only once. Which is why Wes thought I was human. But, I'm not. You didn't even know that I was a lycan? I thought Alpha's had some sort of special ability or something." She smiled sheepishly at me. Now it explains everything. I thought the gods got it all wrong when they paired a lycan up with a human, but it turns out, it wasn't a human after all!
"No, Alpha's can be just as clueless as everybody else, but that's great news! Have you told Wes?" She nodded her head.
"Well, how could you not figure out I was a lycan? I mean, we went to school that had all lycans in it... and yep, last night. When you and Tyler went to bed. He was surprised, much like yourself, but was happy."
"Wait, Lynca Academy is full of lycans? I didn't know that! I knew there were some, but not all!"
"Yeah! Lycans go there if they haven't shifted yet or if they want to get trained better. Hadn't you noticed that 'Lynca' also spells 'lycan'?"
"I am so dumb! Man, I need to be more observant." I said, mostly to myself as Maci laughed. I then remembered what we were talking about.
"So you know you guys are -" I questioned, but got cut off.
"Mates. I know." Her smile was pure happiness and my heart yearned to feel that way. The way I felt about Tyler was different. I was always happy around him, always missing him when he was gone. But, that's not how a mate is supposed to feel... a mate is supposed to feel completely and one hundred percent devoted to their other half. It's so difficult to explain, but that's not what Tyler and I are.
Tyler and I, we're just kids. We think we love each other. It's not that simple.
So, I don't have a mate, after all.
