Blinded By The Lights

****Mike's POV****

Everything was blurring right in front of me, the headlights coming at me, the red glow of taillights in front of me; everything.

My heart was beating out of my chest, and tears were threatening to spill down my cheeks as I glanced over at Iris and her pale face.

The whole seat was now covered with her blood, and her eyes were closed after a previous painful cry.

"Why is there so much blood, Mike?" My voice caught in my throat as I ran through the red light and watch the needle on the speed numbers increase to sixty.

She grabbed my free hand as I shook, and her blood turns my skin a crimson color.

I kept looking at her, and cursed when I had to wait at a red light in the middle of traffic. She was losing way too much blood, and if I didn't get her to the hospital soon, then I was afraid she was going to pass out.

Her hand goes limp in mine just as I'm pulling into the emergency, and I stagger out, lightheaded as I had to carry her into the hospital.

Everything was still blurry by the time she was laying in one of the hospital beds and I was in the chair next to her.

I didn't catch most of what the doctor said, but it was enough to know that I would never get to meet the son I had been anticipating for.

"I don't want to say it's normal, but it's not rare. One of her Fallopian tubes had burst and unfortunately we were unable to save the baby" My watery eyes burn as I look back at her still with closed eyes.

"Does that mean that we can't...ever?" I choke the words out, and wonder why the doctor smiles.

I wanted to grab him by his throat and throw him somewhere. My unborn child never had a chance and he was finding humor?

Instead I sit calmly and bounce my knees.

"Not necessarily. She should have no problem becoming pregnant again and it being successful. These things happen all the time, sometimes because of certain things that had happened at an early time in their life. But in your wife's case, she is perfectly healthy and young. Another pregnancy will be easy" I nod slowly and can't force myself to smile as he walks out and leaves us alone.

As soon as the door shuts and my eyes are back on her, they open and she sits up silently.

Her eyes are on my pants, staring at all the blood.

The nursery was close to being finished, but I felt like locking the room back up and forgetting about it again.

The room is silent except for the constant beeping coming from her heart monitor.

Hearing her sniffle, I look over again and see her with her hands over her face as she sobbed silently.

The pain now hit me the hardest to see her so miserable, to know that we just lost our child and would grieve together.

I stood, walking to her and sitting on the edge of the bed.

She senses me as I sit down, and her arms wrap around my neck, tightly holding me against her as she sobbed into my shoulder.

She started apologizing for reasons I didn't know why, but my throat was still raw from crying in the truck and I felt as though if I spoke, it would make it worse. My wounds were now proven to be internal and external, and those were both bleeding out heavily.

I told myself that this was normal, to just listen to the doctor and that she wasn't all there because of how much blood she lost. Why else would she apologize?
