As if Annie had known what Mikasa planned, she left their dorm room at top speed.
"Damn," the Asian murmured, pulling her shirt on. "Guess she wasn't into getting interrogated."
It doesn't matter, Mikasa thought. I'll corner her at some point today and ask.
She finished getting dressed and walked over to the cafeteria.
She met Hitch, who was on her way to buying her food, toast, scrambled eggs and bacon with some orange juice.
"Heya~" she greeted.
"Hello," Mikasa attempted to wave with a bagel in her right hand. A bottle of water tucked under her arm and a small package of cream cheese in her left hand.
Hitch laughed.
"Come find me once you're sorted." She said.
"No problem, this is all I'm eating." They pair walked out together.
Rico Brzenska waved at them, she was sitting with three other male students, seniors like herself.
"Mikasa!" Sasha Braus called. "Hitch, come over here!" She had a full waffle and three or four strips of bacon on her plate.
Connie was beside himself with laughter.
They sat down and ate, chatting over their food.
"Sho, An-nie wass 'ere 'arly." Sasha said, mouth partially full.
"Excuse me?" Mikasa said, a little disgusted by her friend's talking while chewing.
"Annie was here early." The brunette said after swallowing. "What happened?"
"I don't know," Mikasa admitted. "She left top speed this morning, I had hardly put my shirt on."
"She's over there," Connie said, pointing at a table where only four students sat. Annie and two of her friends, the ones from the photo, and a girl Mikasa didn't recognize with black hair braided at the tips. Annie sat between them, the boys on her left, the girl on her right, she looked tired.
"Didn't that girl go to our high school?" Sasha asked, pointing at the girl sitting next to Annie.
"I think she did." Connie said thoughtfully.
"She did?" Mikasa asked.
"Ah, what was her name... Aha! Mina Carolina." Connie said.
That did not jog Mikasa's memory one bit.
"I don't recall seeing her," the Asian said, looking at the girl.
Mina felt eyes on her and turned to see Mikasa.
She smiled and waved.
"Who the hell are you waving to?" Annie asked.
"Mikasa, she went to my high school." Mina replied.
"She's my roommate." Annie said.
"Really? Have you two become friends yet? You both'd have a lot in common!" Mina said excitedly.
"Not really," Annie said, sugar coating the truth. "Tell me about Ackerman."
"Well, I see you're on last name terms, one step closer to first name terms! But I'll tell you about her," Mina said. "She's really athletic, not unlike yourself. She lived with a boy named Eren Jaeger, I think she was adopted by their family not too long before middle school. Honestly you and her have a lot in common, and I've only known you for two, almost three years."
Mina paused.
"Honestly, I'm not sure what you see in me, but she is probably a better match for you."
"It's not like that," Annie said. "Besides you're a nice person. You're a much better person than me, I'm not sure what you see in me."
"Oh Annie," Reiner said, laughing. "You can be nice when you want to."
"Exactly, you may have not been very nice when you met us, but you've gotten better since you and Mina-" Bertolt was saying, but Annie cut him off.
"Shut it," Annie glared at Mikasa from across the space. The Asian looked away.
"Oh come on Annie, you've definitely mellowed since you've met me." Mina put an arm around Annie.
"Not in public," Annie hissed, as she knew that putting her arms around her was just the one way Mina started a kiss.
"Come on, gay marriage is legal~" Mina pouted.
"That doesn't get rid of homophobes." Annie said.
"You know..." Connie said, turning the table's attention to him. "Mina always mentioned dating someone outside of our school. She never mentioned gender..."
"Ya thin' et 'as An-nie?" Sasha said, her mouth full again.
"I think it is Annie," Connie said quietly. "What do you think Mikasa?"
"Mikasa?" Hitch said.
The Asian was jerked back to reality.
"Sorry, lost in thoughts." She said hastily.
"You were staring at their table." Hitch said.
"And?"
"Nothing," there was clearly something.
"Ah, shit, guys, I gotta get to the gym!" Mikasa stood up quickly and left.
She hadn't eaten much.
-Class-
"Alright. Today, we'll warm up your muscles with a game of baseball." The teacher said, he was quite short.
If Mikasa could remember correctly, his name was Levi.
He showed little care for them as Mikasa noticed the disdain in his eyes.
It was an intense game, Annie was on the other team. She could pitch and bat with ease, always keeping the same bored look on her face.
Mikasa felt like Annie was challenging her, so when they collided as one being pitcher, one being batter.
It had become less of a warm up and more of a private battlefield, useless soldiers fell as the generals fought, one on one.
By the end, it was tied, 3-3 and two hours long in length.
Everyone was exhausted.
"Alright!" Levi said. "Good game," he didn't even play, he just sat on the sidelines, observing. "Now put the equipment back in the shed, Ackerman, Leonhardt." And he left them to it.
Their classmates may have been exhausted, but they all agreed that there had never been a more intense game that they had ever played.
"Mina told me about you, Ackerman," Annie said, carrying the bats and baseballs.
"You refer to everyone but Mina by her last name?"
She didn't reply.
"I'll take that as a yes." Mikasa said, putting the helmets box away.
Silence fell.
"Ackerman... It's occurred to me that we got off on the wrong foot yesterday. So... maybe we can have a truce of sorts." Annie said.
Mikasa did a double take, what did she just hear Annie say?
"Excuse me?" Mikasa said, trying to be as polite as possible.
"You heard, don't make me say it again. Mina---Mina said it'd be a good idea for us to be friends, at the very least we should truce." Annie said.
"Alright," Mikasa was somewhat bewildered by this turn of events. She held out her hand.
Annie took it in hers and shook it.
"A truce it is," Annie said.
"Yeah." Mikasa said.
