(7) Things Go Wrong But Also Right

Mikasa and Annie were bundled up in thick coats and scarves and hats as they crossed the college campus against the bitterly cold wind.
"This is fucking ridiculous." Annie half shouted. "They should cancel classes."
"I know." Mikasa's muffled reply said. "I guess they either don't care about us or the message system is delayed."
An alert dinged on their phones. Annie brought hers out first.
"Classes canceled!" She said loudly. "Fucking finally!"
"Fucking finally." Mikasa agreed, turning on her heel and walking back towards their dorm. "Should be easier walking back with the wind against our backs." She told Annie.
"Mhm." Annie sounded distracted. She was holding her hands in front of her mouth which held her e-cigarette.
"Jesus Annie." She sighed, quickening her pace. Her roommate's smoking habit had not died, in fact since the party it became more frequent. Sometimes Mikasa was forced out of her room or had to use her scarf as a mask. She sometimes wondered if Annie could remember the kiss, and if that was indeed the reason for increased frequency in smoking.
This was not the first time she had thought it, but this time, for whatever reason, it hit her harder than before.
Annie was singing under her breath and through her gritted teeth. It was a song Mikasa recognized.
"Magic moments, when two hearts are caring. Magic moments, memories we've been sharing." It was all she could discern over the wind. But they finally made it to the dorms.
Mikasa wrung out her scarf and took off all her heavy clothes.
"What are you singing?" Mikasa asked.
Annie did not reply.
"Annie?"
The blonde turned around to Mikasa, her cold eyes were the same as ever.
"What?" She snapped.
"Never mind." Mikasa replied, clearly Annie was not in the mood.
Soon enough Mikasa also wouldn't be in the mood to speak.
She was Skyping with Eren, and he seemed nervous, but not enough to distract both of them from the movie they were watching, Spiderman, the one with Tobey Maguire.
"Damn, there goes Willem Dafoe." Mikasa said.
"Shit that must have hurt." Eren said.
"What a good actor. I liked him in Death Note. He was a good Ryuk." Mikasa said.
As the movie wrapped up, Eren looked more and more nervous.
"Hey, I gotta tell you something." He said, scratching the back of his neck.
Mikasa felt a sinking sensation in her gut. Did she expect what was about to happen? Probably not.
"I don't think we can be together anymore. It's not that I don't love you." He said. "I just don't know, I need to figure some things out about myself and focus on my studies. But we're still best friends. Right?"
"Of course." Mikasa said, feeling hollow.
"I'm so sorry Mikasa. This relationship has been great but I think it was better as friends." Eren said.
"I think I'm bisexual." She blurted out, unsure where that came from.
Annie looked up from her phone and over at her roommate. She seemed unable to block that out with whatever music she was listening to. "Sorry... I don't know why I said that..."
"If you are I support you. Just know that." Eren said simply. "I love you Mikasa, in a brotherly, best friend way."
"Yeah... you too." Mikasa said and disconnected the Skype call.
She felt such a mix of emotions and felt some tears well up in her eyes.
"He broke it off with you?" Annie asked in what she thought was a sympathetic tone.
"Yeah..." Mikasa wiped her eyes. "But it's okay... I'll be fine..." She said. She would eventually be fine, but not now.
"Were you serious about being bi?" Annie asked.
"Why the fuck would I lie?"
"Shit man I'm just trying to cheer you up."
"You're doing a damn good job." Mikasa replied sarcastically.
Annie walked over and put her headphones on Mikasa.
A familiar song was playing.

Mikasa was shocked and even more so when Annie curled up into her.
"You... You remember?" She asked.
"I'm not a blackout drunk Mikasa." She replied in a tone softer than usual. Yet again, calling her by her first name. "I remember everything. I especially remember the kiss."
"You're with Mina." Mikasa instantly said.
"Listen, I'm not suggesting we hook up. I'm saying let's just comfort one another. I'm laying down my walls for you Mikasa. Don't fucking ruin this moment." She said.
And they merely cuddled and felt better by one another's presence. Eventually, the pair fell asleep. Annie was curled up on top of Mikasa, who was sprawled out on her bed.
It had been a roller coaster of emotions but now, in their sleep both the girls smiled.
