Mikasa awoke with Annie still curled up against her.
Both their lips were so close, so tantalizingly close. She would have pressed her lips to Annie's, but she restrained herself. She didn't want to wake her friend.
Were they even friends?
Were they having an affair since Annie was still with Mina?
Mikasa groaned, pressing the palms of her hands against her eyes.
She stayed like this for a few minutes.
"Fuck me." She muttered, as confusion swirled around in her head.
"Only if you ask nicely." Came the sound of Annie's bored drawl.
Mikasa removed her hands from her face to find that Annie looked rather pleased with herself for making that joke. A sly smirk curled her lips.
"Fuck you."
"That's your job."
"Oh goddammit!" The Asian girl stood up.
She rubbed her temples. "You can't play with my feelings like this!"
Annie's expression did not change but something flickered in her eyes.
"I should tell you mine and Mina's relationship is on the rocks.... well.... not on the rocks. It's just not having the same spark it used to have." Her tone had barely changed. But there was a discreet shift Mikasa picked up on. "And to be frank, you freaking out over your boyfriend just brought up my own thoughts with Mina...." She took out her cigarette and inhaled then exhaled, blowing some smoke. "I'm trying to fucking empathize with you."
"I understand that." She said. "But you're doing it in a fucking roundabout way. With backhanded compliments—" Mikasa took a deep breath and sighed. She was not going to strangle Annie. She wasn't going to fight the girl she liked. As much as the blood pounding in her ears told her it was a good idea.
"I never said I was good at empathizing with people. Have you met me?" Her voice a drawl. "I do not have the best people skills."
"No shit Annie. What are we gonna even do? About us? Mina?"
"Mikasa. Listen. I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to break up with Mina. We will be friends. We will see what comes of whatever this situation is."
"Whoa—Isn't that a little cold?" She asked.
"Well, yes but I think both Mina and I need this. I have a heart as much as you." Her tone didn't change once, but her eyes were softer. "Just let me do this." She bundled up in warm clothes and left the room.

Mikasa did homework as she tried not to think about Annie and Mina.
Physics. She was good at this. She could do this. The momentum problems took her mind off things as Professor Zoë gave her were really fucking weird.
Like this one about a human being pushed towards a target by what were essentially grappling hooks and canisters of gas. She wonders if any of the other physics professors are normal.
She was on a roll with the problems and didn't even notice the time passing.
No thinking, just physics.
The sound of a notification brought her out of this focus.
A single text from Annie.
All is well.
And an attached photo of Mina and her shaking hands looking oddly stiff.
You broke up?
Yeah. She took it real well.
It doesn't look like it.
Take my damn word for it Mikasa.
.... Fine
Mikasa sets down her phone again, and stares at the physics she has to finish.
"Goddammit Annie." She muttered, gripping her hair.
She flops down on her bed.
She didn't want there to be drama in the friend group.... but Annie probably ensured that, especially if she starts dating Mikasa right after ending it with Mina.
"Annie you insensitive fuck!" She punched the wall, achieving a slight dent that would probably cost her a bunch of money knowing college.
She bites her lip and tries to calm down.
And she pops in her earbuds and listens to some lofi hiphop. That always calms her down.
And slowly she closed her eyes.
After what felt like minutes she felt a hand on her. It was freezing cold.
She sat bolt upright.
"—Been out for a bit." Annie said, withdrawing her icelike hand.
"JESUS FUCKING CHRIST ANNIE!"
"Hey, calm down." She said.
"You just touched me with an ice hand!"
"Yeah well you were out for a bit."
"Couldn't just shake me?"
Annie smirked and her eyes gleamed with mischief.
"I could have.... but where's the fun in that."
Before Mikasa could speak again, Annie straddles Mikasa's hips, places her hands on her face (Mikasa winced as on hand was incredibly cold still) and kissed her.
The anger left immediately and was soothed out and she kissed back.
All thoughts centered around their friends evaporated.
All that mattered was this moment. Actually kissing Annie and not because of a spin the bottle.
It was nice.
