I was in a full sprint for a good half hour. I was panting heavily but I really didn’t care, the further away from him I was the calmer I would get. I had no idea where I was going, merely trusting my wolf to get me where I needed to go.

                Pack.

I sensed it now, I was going the right way, and I was getting close. I heard howling, the pack was wondering where their Alpha was, and if he would be coming home with several females in tow. I slowed down to a trot, trying to catch my breath while the photo was still clamped between my jaws. It would be another hour before I reached them at this pace, but the Beta would be looking after them so my absence shouldn’t be too much of a worry.

A thought struck me; What if the Beta was older than me? Much older. Taking orders from me was not going to go down well. I suddenly became quite scared, they would never accept me as Alpha, heck I would probably be challenged the second I stated my title, but isn’t that what I want? To not be Alpha? To go back and with my father and friends? To go back to a place where I belonged? Since I had been disowned I felt more like an Alpha, like I had a responsibility, like I owed it to them to protect them even thought I had no idea who they were. I wasn’t even sure of the size of the pack.

A strong wind came from the direction I was heading in, I caught the pack’s scent: three females, one of them pregnant, four males and one pup. It was a tiny pack! No wonder I had never heard of this pack before, seems like the previous Alpha had barely even started recruiting. Granted that gaining members was difficult, but for him to be taking on powerful Alphas when his pack is this small? He must have been out of his mind. Slightly relieved with the fact that I shouldn’t have too much trouble with them, I quickened my pace, breaking out into a slight jog. A gust blew in my face again, my nostrils flared taking in this new scent. Female, rogue, unmated. The pack could wait, I might even bring this lone wolf with me. Changing direction from north to northwest, I set out to find whoever this she-wolf was. Luck was on my side, I was facing down wind from her so she would never smell me coming. I could tell I was getting very close, I slowed my pace to a walk, I trod carefully as to not make any sound. I could see through the trees a clearing, with a huge pond in the middle and sitting at the far end was her.

She was beautiful, I edged closer to the clearing so I could get a better look. She had short black hair that brushed her shoulders, icy blue eyes and beautiful full lips. She was only in a black singlet top and shorts, dipping her feet into the pond, she was singing softly,

“It’s the same old team, since 1916,

in your head, in your head,

                                they are dying.”

Her voice was calming, like I could fall asleep on her voice alone. I backed up a little so I could shift without her noticing. After my bones had finished rearranging themselves and my fur had disappeared, I edged back to the tree line after placing the photo in my jeans pocket. She was gone. Shocked that I had already lost her, I walked through the tree line and to the edge of the pond, directly opposite from where she was previously sitting. I peered around and strained my ears for the tinniest sound, but in the wrong direction. A hand clamped around my mouth while the other had a razor to my throat.

“Mmf!” she pressed the razor against me.

“Shut up,” she hissed into my ear, “who are you, why are you here?” she let go of my mouth, all sweetness gone from her voice she pressed on. “Answer me or I will kill you.” the razor didn’t scare me, but I played along.

“My name is Flint, I’m the new Alpha of Hanging Rock, I killed the previous one this afternoon. As for what I’m doing here, I caught your scent and decided-”

“To claim me?” she spat, “You’re sick, all you males disgust me!” she pressed a little too hard with the razor and made a small cut, not that she seemed to care.

“You’re unmated and you seem to be under no form of protection.”

“I’m under my own protection.” she stepped away from me but kept a watchful eye. “Leave me alone, don’t you dare come anywhere near me again. Alpha or not just get the fuck out of here.” I stood for a moment longer, taking in her beauty. She was an inch or two shorter than I and seemed to be about my age.

“I’m sorry if I caused you any trouble.” I bowed my head to her and looked her in the eyes one last time. Disgust, hatred and fear is what I could read off of her. She stood strong as she uttered her next word through gritted teeth:

“Leave.” I left. Back through the tree line I shifted back and set off at a brisk pace to my lost and confused pack. A thought occurred to me as I got further away from the clearing, it was a rather rash and relatively stupid thought; I must have her.
