THE DAY OF BIRTH

Early the next morning I woke to the sound of crunching. I flopped around until I was sitting up and looked around groggily. My eyes landed on Romar who was happily munching on a bowl of Froot Loops, his eyes scanning over large magazine.

"Good morning" I said rubbing my eyes trying to wake up fully.

"Morning" He said in between bites of sugery goodness.

"How was your sleep?" I asked.

"It wasn't great, the storm kept me up. I'm surprised you didn't wake up again." He said. He set his magazine and bowl down and turned to face me.

"Have you checked the roads?" I asked, curious to know when we would be able to leave.

"Yeah," He said. "I went out about an hour ago when it stopped raining. The roads are still flooded but if it doesn't rain for the next few hours it should be low enough for us to drive home."

I let out a sigh of relief. "That's good, Although when I do go home my mom is gonna be so pissed." I gave a chuckle.

"Wait," He lifted his head and cocked an eyebrow. "Did your mom answer?"

"I'm not sure let me check." I said rolling over to my phone and looking at it. "Ohhh yea. She is pissed. She wants me to call her ASAP. What about your parents?"

He gave me a shrug, "I told them I was staying with a friend."

"Don't you wanna let them know you're safe?" I asked. I was confused as to why Romar wouldn't tell his parents the truth. Not that I could speak much to truthfulness when I snuck away for Pringles.

"Meh, They would probably worry more if they knew I was stranded here. I'll just call them later and say i'm staying at my friends for a few more hours." He said, nodding off. Romar gave a large yawn and said, "I think i'm gonna try to sleep a little more." I nodded and he fell back into the embrace of his blankets.

I stood up the best I could and exited the tent. When I was able to stand up fully out in the store I stretched and decided I needed to use the restroom. I headed to the back of the store to the employee lounge and restroom, and cleaned myself up. After washing my face, redressing my wound, and brushing my teeth I roamed around the lounge and looked at all the stuff laying around. I made my way around the room until I came to a large calendar hanging on the wall and a cork board tacked with a bunch of flyers

"Lost dog, garage sale," I muttered to myself as I read through the flyers. Moving over to look at the calendar I cooed at the picture of a kitten and puppy sleeping together until one of the circled dates caught my eye. In the square containing the date was the words, 'Romar's 18th b-day' in blue ink. "Romar?" I whispered to myself in confusion as I strained to remember todays date.

My eyebrows shot up at the realization that Romar's birthday was today! Why had he not mentioned it, someones 18th birthday was important!

I stared at the calendar a few more minutes as I tried to make a plan. If Romar and I were gonna be stuck in here for a few more hours I should throw him a party to celebrate!

First thing I did was sprint to the clothes section and yank out a t-shirt and pair of cargo pants. I threw them on in the middle of the isle in a rush. I wasn't sure how long Romar would be asleep for so I had to work fast.

Romars POV.

As soon as my head hit the pillow I was lulled into an unpleasant dream, the details of the dream were fuzzy but it had a bad feel to it. What felt like moments later I woke to the sound of a stereo blasting right outside the tent. MKTO's song 'classic' met my ears.
