"It explains the dreams-""Don't feed into her lies." Danny says as he paces his office.
"Danny, we have to accept-"
"No we don't. I'm not rogue, I can't be their Alpha-"
"Maybe not all of them chose to be rogues, if they have families then there are innocent people-"
"She said she's the youngest and there aren't other children, the others are adults. My plan is still the same. If they are trying to attack us so they can kill me and take what we have, then I'm not their Alpha, and I will not show them mercy. We'll spare her, but that's it-"
"Danny killing them could make you worse, they're connected to you and you're killing them-"
"I'm killing rogues. That's all they are."
"Okay, but how do you expect us do to that when they can sense you from afar. When every time you take one of their lives you might be fueling yourself towards being one of them?"
"I don't know Cora; I'm not going to turn to them with open arms though!" he argues. "I can control this. I can control myself, and I can get rid of these rogues without turning..." He sighs and tries to calm down. "I need your support Cora. I'm- I'm going fucking crazy." He sits down and puts his face in his hands. "Why the fuck is this happening? This has never happened to anyone- how am I their Alpha when all I did was kill theirs? They should have fled, not followed."
"You... You must have been on the edge of going rogue, just enough for them to follow you. You're still on the edge-"
"Don't say that."
"You have been. You've been so worried and angry..."
"I know..." He sighs and leans in to me as I stand beside him and rub his back. "I won't be one of them, though. I don't kill innocent people, or humans, and I won't let my wolf take over. I can't let them live Cora, if I do and then one of you get hurt... I'd never be the same. We need to talk to this girl, get information, and then attack. They might come for her, and we'll have to put our lives in danger-"
"She's a child Danny. Like your sisters. Remember that." I say, and he nods. I wince when I feel a baby kick me, and Danny looks up.
"You okay?"
"Yeah, just kicks." I say, and he puts his hand to my stomach, and I feel a kick right where his hand is, and his face lights up, and I see the worry dwindle. "I need something to drink, I'm going back stairs." I say, and he nods.
"I'm going with you." He says, and I don't protest, because I'm still a bit shaken by tonight, and worried about him. When we descend the stairs I hear Danny growling a bit, and give him a look to reassure him. I know why he's being like this, I smell it too, the child smells of the rogues strongly. I see her across the living room on the couch, and Alice is talking to her as she eats orange slices, bundled up in a blanket, her big brown eyes fearful.
"Will you pour me some juice Danny, I want to talk to Alice." I say, and he nods, giving a hard glance over at the couch, and I'm glad the girl doesn't notice. "Where is Frea? And everyone else?" I ask, and Alice stands as I walk over, and redirects me as the girl looks down at her snack.
"They left to the other house. I took over for Frea..." She says, when we reach the windows across the room. She speaks quietly, and with worry. "She and the others went to talk, to figure out who is going to fight if Danny asks them to attack. They know it's Danny's decision ultimately, but Leon's worried about Heather, Sam doesn't want me to go, you know how it is." She says, smiling weakly, knowing it wasn't that simple.
"How is the girl? What do you know about her?" I ask, glancing back at the child.
"Her name is Lucille, but she prefers Lucy, she's ten, and her favorite color is orange." She said, with another faint smile and a small chuckle, looking down at her shoes. She shakes her head though, as her smile goes away. "She doesn't want to go back," she says as she looks back at me, and right into my soul, as a friend, and I knew what she was going to say before she said it, and she felt fear that I wouldn't understand. So I let it play through, and in that moment decided to truly hear her out. Never before had she needed me to do that, but I'm her Luna and friend, and she deserves it. "She was traded to a man, for a bit of money and a motorcycle. Her parents were killed by him, and he took her because she was valuable. She doesn't even realize how wrong it all is. She said she missed her parents, but that she understood why her uncle killed them, and that she knew how valuable she was. She said she only ran, because she didn't want to be sold for marriage. She doesn't really- I don't know- she's a little messed up you know?" She began crying a bit and shook her head again.
"We'll help her. Danny is hesitant, but he said we'll take her in." I said with a nod as I rubbed her shoulder, trying to comfort her. She nodded, but then she asked what I had expected her to when she looked me in the eyes moments ago. She wiped her eyes and looked back in mine.
"Sam and I, we want to take her in, well it was my idea, but Sam said it was alright with him. We were starting to talk about having our own, but maybe this is a sign or something, Luna. I feel connected to her, like I need to take care of her. I feel like she's important to our pack. We want to be her guardian, if it's okay with you?" She asks, and I smile back at her, when she gives me a hopeful one. I see it in her eyes already, the same look I see on Frea, Winny, and when I look in the mirror. She's a mother.
"I'll talk to Danny. I'm sure if she's okay with it he won't argue." I nod, and she hugs me immediately.
"Thank you, Luna. It means so much to me."
"You have a big heart Alice, there is so much love between you and Sam, and I see no problem with you sharing the care you have for one another." I say, squeezing her tightly. "Can I ask you a favor, though?"
"Sure thing." She says as she pulls away while nodding.
"Can you make sure she gets washed up? You can ask Vi and Rose for some of their older clothes, she's a bit small, but we'll get her strength up in no time. We just need to make sure we get the rogue smell out of the house." I say the last bit quietly, and she nods as if it's an order.
"I understand- it was making me sick too." She says with a chuckle. "I'll make sure to take care of her." She adds.
"Alright, let me talk to Danny." I say, and she nods and goes over to the girl, and talks with her. And asks her if she'd like to get cleaned up.
"Her name is Lucille, she's ten, and Alice wants to adopt her." I tell Danny as I walk up to him. He's staring across the living room at them, but he looks up at me when I speak, handing me my drink.
"Really?" He asks, skeptically. "Why?"
I shrug.
"She had a good feeling about her. They can talk easily with her. I think it makes sense. Her and Sam have been uncertain if they're ready for parenthood. You know they were never as certain as the rest of us, and maybe this is a good step for them. And... And I know you worry about her being around you, so maybe it will be better if she isn't under the same roof." I point out. I want this to work.
"Okay."
"Really?" I smile at him. He nods.
"I see you think it's a good idea. I trust you. You've made the decision, and I trust it." He nods. I smile proudly at him, proud of both of us, because ever since he's been back we have been making decisions together more often, and it makes me truly feel like a Luna, it makes me proud of myself. I nod when Alice and the girl begin to walk by, towards the stairs. She mouths a 'thank you'.
"I'm proud of you." I tell Danny, and he smiles nervously, as he pulls me to him and kisses my forehead.
"I just hope we can figure this out... And I just hope we're right about her."
"We are." I assure him.
(pictured: Alice and Sam, aka Taissa and Evan. I've always debated if it was going to be Emma and Evan or Taissa and Evan- in my mind, and it's always gone back and forth. Some parts of the story I wrote with Emma in mind, others Taissa, but I settled on the later.)
