Mateo’s POV
I am sitting in my room, staring out the window, waiting for Roger to come talk to me. I need to ask him about his scent at the lake and where he disappeared to during the hunt. I have a bad feeling about him and just need to get his side of things.
KNOCK KNOCK
“Come in, Roger.”
Roger walks into the room as I turn my chair to follow his movement across the room to the chair opposite my desk.
“Have a seat.” I point to the chairs.
“What’s up, Mateo? What do you need to talk to me about?” Roger says with a quiver in his voice.
“We had an incident at the lake while you guys were gone, just wanted to talk to you about it, among other things.” I sit back in my chair, knotting my hands together and start at him. He seems nervous but not guilty. Hmm.
“What kind of incident?” he says and gulps.
“Well, seeing as your scent was in the tree about the same time as the incident, I was wondering if you could tell me.”
“Mateo, what are you talking about? I haven’t been to the lake in days. The last time I was there was at least a couple days before we went on the hunt.” Roger says and sits back in his chair. He is not fidgeting or squirming in any way so maybe he is telling the truth but what about his scent?
“Why would your scent be in the tree then?”
“I don’t know Mateo, maybe I left my hat there or something. I have no idea.”
“Hmm, ok, I’ll check it out. What about the hunt, Roger? Where did you disappear too?”
“I just got lost, Mateo, jeesh. I was running and not paying attention to where I was going. I honestly was following one of the rogues scent and wasn’t paying attention to the guys. I didn’t even realize I had gotten separated until I lost the rogues scent. I retraced my steps and found the guys not to long later. What’s this about, Mateo? Don’t you trust me?” Roger says and glares in my general direction, not really making eye contact.
“Well, Roger, I have recently discovered at least two incidents where Angel has been on pack land without my knowledge. I am worried about Cici as Angel seems to think they are soul mates. He’s insane. I just need to get a few things straight, is all. Don’t ever separate from the pack during a hunt. If Angel tried to contact you, tell me straight away, alright?”
“Yeah, Mateo, of course I will. Anything else?”
“No, Roger, you can go. Will you send Blake and Alejo in, please?”
Roger walks across the room, stopping at the door. He looks back at me as if he is about to say something, shakes his head and walks out of the room, closing the door softly.
He’s not telling me something. I don’t know what it could be but I know he is hiding something, but it’s Roger. I mean he’s a follower, what could he possibly have to hide?
Blake and Alejo walk into the room bumping shoulders with each other and laughing. I smile at them and point to the chairs. Blake pushes Alejo and runs to the chair Roger just exited, leaving Alejo to sit beside him.
“What’s up man?” Blake questions.
“I just had a conversation with Roger. Blake what happened to Roger while you were following the rogue?”
“Oh, man, I have no idea, one minute he was right behind me, the next he was gone. He showed up a couple hours later saying he got lost or something like that. Why, what’s going on?” Blake explains while turning to look between myself and Alejo.
