Chapter Thirty-four
Katniss's POV
There are several people around Peeta and I. We haven't been able to do anything except follow along with the small herd of troops. Several of Vada's guards have been taken care of and by taken care of I mean the soldiers asked them if they would stand down. If they wouldn't stand down, the soldiers shot them. Many of the guards decided to stand down, but there have been a few stubborn ones.
The entire war has passed in a similar manner. We've been close to the front lines like this right here, following troops around, in the Presidential Mansion. But, we haven't done the fighting. Of course, we've had our own guns just in case something happened where we would actually need to use them. I haven't reloaded the gun once. I haven't even fired it. Not once. We've stood around letting everyone else do all the work. We haven't been allowed to do anything because they don't want us to get 'hurt'. Yet, they made us going through training. Granted training didn't take long and the war itself has been short. It's only been a few days since we've started and yet here we are in the Capitol already. The Districts didn't take long and almost seemed too easy. It was so easy that this has to be some kind of trap. Vada has to have something planned and waiting for us. It's only a matter of time. There is no way in hell that Vada Snow doesn't have some diabolical plan. It's all she does.
"This corridor is clear. Let's move out," one of our soldiers says.
Our posse takes off down the hall. The hall is quiet and our footsteps echo loudly as we move. Our footsteps and the echo of fighting goes on outside. While we're in here, the rest of the troops our out there fighting to gain ground in the Capitol. We had already gained up to the Presidential Mansion, hence how we got in here. Now they're fighting for more ground, while we're here trying to find our little Willow.
"We have to be getting close," one of the guards says as we hang a right.
"The doors to office are just up here," I say, grabbing Peeta's hand as we hurry along.
"Unless she's not in the office," Peeta mutters.
I tug on his hand as we continue to move. It's odd because we haven't seen any Peacekeeper guards in awhile. "Don't think like that." We stop at the doors. The guards are whispering between each other. I take a deep breath. This could be the moment Peeta and I have been waiting for since our little girl was taken from us.
One of the guards slowly turns the handle, pushing the door open in the process. I hold my breath now. The light starts seeping through the doorframe. Once the door is fully open, the guards rush in taking positions with their guns raised. I don't move, and Peeta does the same. My eyes scan the room, seeing the various people in the inner circle of the Snow Regime. Then, my eyes land on what I've been searching for. My little girl, Willow. She's being held in someone's arms. My eyes trail to see that Vada herself is holding my daughter. I go to move forward, but I'm stopped by one of our soldiers.
"Let me go. That's my daughter," I say.
"Not yet," he says quietly. The soldiers toward the front move forward grabbing each member of the Regime. One of them pulls Willow from Vada's arms and walks her back toward Peeta and I as another soldier takes custody of Vada.
I rush forward grabbing my girl out of the soldier's arms as the Snow Regime is led out of the room. Peeta comes up behind me and wraps his arms around both myself and Willow, tears streaming down his face. Tears stream down my face as well.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Willow says excitedly.
My sobs come harder now. My little girl is back, and I'm not letting her go from my sight anytime soon.
Yeah, I know, it's short. I'm well aware, but as I've explained in the past it's because I'm getting a little stuck on shit and I just had to get through and finish the book. So I did, there are two more chapters left to upload. I'll go and start editing this sometime and make it better. I'll put something on my message board and there will be a warning in the description if I'm editing. 'Ight? Ight. -- Alexis
