The class seemed to go on forever; Annabella had learned this stuff years ago back at Base. She rested her head on the table for a few minutes when someone poked her. Once, twice, thrice. She lifted her head to look at Jason, who was grinning smugly.

“What?” She groaned, dragging out the ‘a’. He motioned to look around the classroom. Everyone was gone. “Oh…” She said, dumbly, “Yeah… thanks then. What class do we have next?” He chuckled,

“History, c’mon, we need to get you a seat near me.” Annabella scrunched her face up in confusion, “I saw how quickly you went through the work there… you slept for three quarters of the period.” Annabella shrugged like it was no big deal and motioned for them to leave.

Out in the hall, Annabella’s phone rang, the screen told her it was Christopher, she held her finger up to Jason and pressed answer before pressing the phone to her ear.

“Annabella, you need to come back to the hotel!”  He exclaimed, “I’ll explain everything once you’re here, I’m sorry it can’t wait, love. Instructions from Carpenter,” He justified

“Alright, I should be back in five, maybe ten minutes. I’ll see you!” She turned to an expectant  Jason, “I’m so sorry, I have to go… emergency with my brother…” She smiled and turned to run to her bike, when Jason’s voice interrupted her,

“Hey! Wait! If I don’t ask you now, I never will,” He explained, looking awkward but still smirking. “My entire family is having this… gathering… will you go with me?” She smiled and said,

“I’ll get back to you” before running to her bike. She raced through the empty streets and made it to the hotel in record time. She handed her bike to the valet and ran to the stairs, skipping the elevator this time. When she got to her room, Christopher was pacing.  “Christopher, there can’t be a compromise already! We’re only on the first day of our mission!” Just as she finished talking, Carpenter stepped into view.

“500, 172, please take a seat, I’ll explain now.” They all sat on the leather couches as Carpenter began to speak. “So, this was a retrieval mission in the beginning, as you both know, get evidence that can be used in court. But now, it’s changed considerably. It’s now a protection mission for the family and everyone else attending the gathering they are having this weekend. Can either of you get into that?” Annabella nodded,

“Jason Monroe invited me to go with him, a friend of his cousin is interested in Christopher, she’s going too.” Carpenter nodded in approval, before handing them both manila files, filled with photos.

“If worst comes to worst, find two cars and round these people up, you’d have to take them to a very secret location that will be sent to you. I have adult agents working the party also, they will take the adults.”

“If that would be all, sir, I’d like to go back to school for lunchtime? The Monroe and Co want me to sit with them.” Carpenter nodded and Christopher left for work immediately, Annabella hung around for another hour before setting off for school.  Just as she was walking through the gates, she got a text from Christopher saying to get a late note from the front office.  She said a soft hello to Mrs Davenport and left to see ‘Monroe and Co’.

They were all seated outside, under a tree. Jason and Dean looked up and beamed, making Annabella realise how awkward this lunch could actually get.

“Hey, Anna!” Andrea yelled to her, Annabella frowned slightly at the shortening of her name, but otherwise smiled back and sat down.

“So, Annabella, did you think about my offer?” Jason asked hopefully. Annabella turned to him and smiled,

“I’d love to, just give me time, place and dress code.” He smiled, showing off a pair of dimples on his cheeks,

“Great, it’s formal, so wear a dress-”

“OOH!” Andrea squealed, “We’ll take you shopping!” Jason smiled at his sisters and beaming cousins,

“That’s sorted; I’ll pick you up at one in the afternoon, so no need to worry about place,” Annabella smiled,

“So,” Dean asked casually, “You’re taking Annabella to the family gala?” Jason stiffened, but still nodded, “Cool, happy for you bro; you pull a hump and dump on the girl and I’ll cork you.” He added seriously,

“Wait…” Jason interjected, “I thought you’d go ape-shit on me…” Dean shot him a ‘why’ look, “You called dibs…” Dean began laughing,

“I see the girl like I see Andy, Aria, Blake, Mollie and Scar! No worries!” They all shared a mutual chuckle just as the bell went,

“Come on girl, we have calculus!” Jason beamed before dragging her away.
