Rapunzel stared up at the ceiling. She was in bed with her husband, Eugene, and wasn't getting a wink of sleep. Tomorrow was the day when all the soldiers of the kingdom go off to war against the Gromites. And Eugene would go with him.
She knew it was his duty as prince to protect the kingdom, she just wished he didn't have to leave. She turned her head and saw him fast asleep. With one finger she gently prodded him on the cheek. Nothing happened.
"Eugene?" She whispered prodding a little harder.
Grumbling, Eugene opened his eyes.
"Yes..." He mumbled
"I-I can't sleep." She whispered.
Eugene positioned himself so he could see her face.
"Maybe.....because you busy trying to poke your husband."He said with a grin.n
"I'm serious, Eugene."
He stroked her hair. "I know. I just don't want you to keep worrying."
"Well it's not helping." She grumbled refusing to look into his soft brown eyes.
"What's the matter?" He said sympathetically.
"I-I'm scared."
"Of what?"
"That- that..... When your in battle.... You'll get hurt or-or captured or worse......" She started to sob.
"Rapunzel look at me."He spoke gently.
She looked into his eyes. It made her heart ache that she won't look in in them again for the longest time.
"I don't want to leave tomorrow, knowing I left a worried wife. I know you don't want me too leave and I know that your scared. But I have to go."
He pulled her close. Rapunzel wanted this embrace to last forever. She wanted him to stay with her more than anything in the whole wide world. She didn't want to be alone again.
Suddenly she had no control of her tears. She sobbed in his shoulder. Eugene gently stroked her short brown hair.
"Promise me...." She whispered. "Promise me...that you won't let anything happen to you."
Eugene didn't say anything. For the longest time he stayed quiet as if he was thinking it over. Rapunzel tried to stay patient. The silence began to feel unbearable.
"Eugene?" She asked wondering if he was still listening.
He held her tighter. "I promise." He whispered into her ear.
"Thank you." She whispered back.

That morning, Rapunzel braced herself as she stood in front of the palace. Her parents stood there with her ready for their son-in law to depart to protect their Kingdom. And they were also their to comfort their daughter.
Rapunzel walked up to Eugene as he was ready to mount Maximus.
"Did you remember to pack extra blankets? I hear it's very cold in Grom." She said
Eugene playfully rolled his eyes. "Yes Rapunzel, I remembered to pack extra blankets."
"Oh...well did you remember to pack your...."
"Rapunzel." He put her hands on her shoulders. "You made me double check and triple check. I think I packed everything." He said with a smile.
Rapunzel started to tear up. "I know....."
"Please don't cry." Eugene wiped a tear off her cheek. "I don't want to leave with you crying I want you to smile."
Rapunzel gave him a small grin. Without hesitation she hugged him.
"I'll see you...later." He said, not knowing how long he was going to be gone.
"See ya later." She said back.
Eugene mounted on the white horse. Rapunzel thought he was about to ride off. But he surprised her when he bent down a pressed his lips against hers. It was one of the greatest moments in her life.
He pulled away and whispered "I love you, Rapunzel."
"I love you, Eugene." she said with her arms wrapped around her neck.

When he rode off, something pulled at her heart. It felt like something"as telling her that he wasn't coming back.
"No!" she told herself "He promised me he wasn't going to let anything happen to him. And he won't!"
Sadly, she was wrong.
