Hiccup anxiously paced back and forth in front of Astrid's house. He never been more afraid in all his life, not even when he fought the red death. "Why did I let this happen?" He said to himself as snow crunched beneath his feet. "Everything is so messed up." He ruffled his hair. His mind kept playing back to the night when it happened. It started out as a typical night. Hiccup was sitting at his kitchen table. A blizzard was starting to blow outside. His hands were still felt like ice from riding in the cold and Toothless was curled up by the fire trying to keep warm too. All of a sudden the door flew open and a mountain of snow flew into his house.
"Astrid?" shouted Hiccup, surprised to see her in this weather especially since she had a cold.(Not that she admitted it)
Astrid push the door closed with a lot of effort. Hiccup was suprised to see that she didn't have coat on, just a scarf that she wraped around her face.
"W-why are you here? Hiccup asked awkwardly.
She pulled the scarf under her chin. Her face was a sickly pale and her eyes looked tired but still had that fierce gleam she always had.
" Two baby gronkles got loose." she panted "There somewhere out in the storm."
She didn't have to say anymore, Hiccup was already grabing his scarf, hat, and coat and Toothless was at his side. Quickly, Astrid reached for the knob.
"Wait!" Hiccup grabbed for her arm. "Let me get you a coat."
She glared at him, "There's no time!" She pulled her arm away, lifted her scarf under her eyes, and opened the door.
Hiccup tensed as snow hit his face. He opened his eyes to see that Astrid was already out the door. Toothless ran out in front of him and Hiccup struggled to close the door aganist the howling wind.
"Astrid!"he called. It was hard to see anything though all the snow and wind.
"Hurry up, wimp!" she called back.
Hiccup had to admit, he was afraid. He didn't feel comfortable going out into the storm, even though he did things like this all the time. It felt like something was telling him that they shouldn't go out tonight. But there was a fear that was stronger, and that was Astrid getting hurt.
It wasn't that he doubted her strength ( in fact he knew that she was much stronger than him) but he knew what she was like. Even if he refuse to go she would've gone anyway, putting herself in danger. So despite his fears, he followed her.
Astrid was already mounted on her dragon, as if she wasn't about to wait for him any longer.
"Shouldn't we ride together?" Asked Hiccup
Astrid glared at him once more, "Yes Hiccup, I forgot to tell you that I'm completely helpless and can't ride my own dragon."
"That's not what I..." He began.
"I can take care of myself." She yelled. "But those gronkles out there can't!"
And with that she flew off.
Hiccup let out a sigh. "It's hopeless." He quickly mounted Toothless and rode after her.
The rode side by side in the cold night. The snow blowing in Hiccup's face stung, he tried to force his eyes to stay open. But his sight was not the most important thing. He and Astrid had to stay silent. They listened carefully for some kind of sound. Even Toothless kept his ears pricked.
They rode for about 30 minutes, but to Hiccup it felt like hours. When he noticed that Toothless was starting to flick his ears as if he heard something. Hiccup listened though the howling winds.
