VERNON HAD ARRIVED OVER three hours ago. The six of us had split into two teams, I was on a team with Elijah and Hardy. We were fielding and the game had been going for so long now that I had no clue who was scoring what.

Hardy was panting heavily and Elijah was sweating. Mainly because our team strategy included them trying to save the ball from my clutches. I was trying as hard as I could to help out, but I knew nothing about softball and also I was the least physical person in the world.

Both Elijah and Hardy had both taken their shirts off, because apparently it was the fabric constricting them that was causing our team to lose so badly.

"Fuck,' Elijah huffed. "Why are you three so good at batting?"

"Just strike out already!" Hardy yelled at them.

"It's not our fault you suck," Mona laughed.

"Well you're halfway there guys," Vernon mocked. "Everyone knows that playing half nude really helps the mind."

"Shut up Brookes," Hardy rolled his eyes.

"Why don't you put Devon up to pitch?" Tom suggested. "You two aren't letting her play."

"I'm good," I held my hands up in defence.

Hardy and Elijah looked at each other and had a silent conversation, then they looked over to me.

"Oh no," I muttered.

"Remember when you won that game of dodge ball?" Elijah asked. "People call you Dodge Ball Dev now."

"That is a stone cold lie," I scoffed.

"Come on," he groaned, "just give it a try. What could you possibly have to lose?"

"My life," I muttered, but grabbed the ball off of Hardy and went to stand on the make-do pitcher's mound, which was just two of the bases stacked on top of each other.

"You just need to visualise where you want the ball to go," Elijah told me.

"I know how to throw a ball," I narrowed my eyes at him. Vernon hit the bat against the base and I took a deep breath. I decided for a simple overarm throw, but I might have thrown it to hard because it went straight past Vernon and hit the bin that Mona had put behind them. "My bad. You want to toss that back over and I'll try again?"

"Devon," Elijah said. "You just striked him out."

"Nice," I smiled.

"You have no clue what that means, do you?" Elijah smirked.

"Not a clue," I shook my head.

"We get to bat now," Hardy laughed.

"That was a complete fluke," Vernon muttered.

"You want to bat first?" Elijah asked me.

"No," I scoffed.

"You're up Eli," Hardy told him. He nodded and grabbed the bat before going to stand on the base. I sat down on the grass behind Elijah and as the other team huddled he swung the bat and I noticed that he had a small tattoo on the left side of his lower back.

When did he get that?

"You ready Eli?" Tom asked as he stepped up to the mound.

"Born ready," he said and Tom wound his arm back. Elijah hit the ball hard and sent Vernon and Mona running after it. Hardy cheered Elijah on as he ran around the bases and made it back to the first one easily.

When Mona and Vernon finally got the ball back to Tom, they looked a little confused.

"Did you even run?" Mona huffed.
