SEPT. 14, 1716, BRUSSELS

Emery peaked out of the windows in her quiet home. Not much sunlight had entered the grieving home ever since the Jensen siblings had lost their mother. Unfortunately for the two, they had not inherited the Trickster gene from their mother, rather their long-absent father.

"Close the window, Emery." Her brother called out from behind as he made his way into the living area, where she was situated on a comfy armchair.

Emery begrudgingly did as told. Her brother was a lot closer to their  mother than Emery was, making this far harder on him than her.

You see, their mother was only a mere vampire, turned strangely after she fell off her balcony three stories down, snapping her spine.

"How long do we have to do this? Lock ourselves away from the rest of the world?" She asked with a whining time while occupying her eyes on the ticking clock above the fireplace.

"Mom was found with a stake in her heart, Em. Obvious signs of the supernatural, vampire folklore. It won't be long 'till they come knocking on our door," Joseph explained.

"So playing the grieving children will prove...what, exactly?" She questioned her brother.

"You can really act so daft at times, love," Joseph shook her head before turning to look at her, "it'll prove that we weren't the ones that stuck the stake through her damn heart."

Emery didn't reply, simply turning back to the clock above the fireplace. She felt slightly embarrassed at not being able to pick up that obvious detail, though she did stop to wonder why they would even suspect her and Joseph in the first place.

"Look, it's only a couple more days, I promise. Okay?" Joseph asked her with a forced smile on his face.

"Okay." But it wasn't okay. It wouldn't be okay for the next couple of days. Emery being Emery, she had to sneak out. So, she did. Going around the nearest marketplace, picking up fabrics and food, everyone turned to stare at her. Everyone knew her. The girl who lost her mother, parading around after only a few short days. The local authorities were informed and it was only a matter of hours before they were knocking on the Jensen door. By then, they were gone. A mystery in the night, leaving to find a new home, just like every other year.

PRESENT DAY

Emery was walking along the streets of New Orleans the next night. She knew exactly where she had to go after hearing about the newest death in town, Miss Jane-Anne Deveaux.

Emery could imagine the chaos that could go down at a scene like this, after hearing about Marcel and his rules. Having a witch on "vampire boundary" may just get them all killed. And Emery would be damned if she was going to miss that.

"..Witches don't get involved in Vampire business." Emery could already hear voices from her position on one of the nearby street corners.

Turning the corner, she stood right at the edge in order to get the exact view that she needed. Emery could clearly see Jane-Anne from her spot. It looked like the girl's neck had been slit, though it was the obvious work of a vampire.

Zoning out of the conversation, Emery could hear footsteps behind her. She turned to come face to face with a vampire. Grinning, Emery tilted her head for a moment before disappearing. Not really, though.

She had only placed an imaginary replica of herself in that position, letting the vampire believe he had killed the girl as she watched her imaginary self get mutilated. Well, he sure wasn't a clean eater.
