I sat in silence as I heard both stories from Red and Adam. Adam was shocked about Red's sayings. "He..wanted me to?" Adam whispered. Red nodded. "He saw you as a father figure. I hope..you do what he says."
Adam nodded. "O-of course."
I ran up to Red and hugged him. "I'm so sorry this happened.." Red mumbled. I squeezed him tightly. "It's alright.."
He petted my hair. "He did love you, Blessing."
At the funeral
I sat in the front row, with the rest of the guys, listening to the preacher speak. I didn't hear much, but I could feel everyone's sadness. Even my mother, who was too upset to make it to the visitation, but made it to the funeral, a tissue box in her lap as she dabbed away the tears. At last, I heard.
"Now, his daughter, Blessing Clayton, will say a few words." the preacher gestured me up there. I got up and walked over, giving him a nod of thanks. I looked over my shoulder, seeing the closed casket behind me, containing my father. I looked back and looked to the floor, feeling the eyes all baring me. I inhaled, then began."My father, James Clayton, was the best father you could ever ask for. A hardworking, and loving father. When I was an just a small child, he was never there. Working, from dawn til dusk. But why you may ask? Because, he was trying to care for his family as much as possible. Me and my mother would always sit together on Sunday nights at the dinner table, waiting for my father to return. Sadly he never did until late in the night. We'd always save him the last slice of cake every birthday." My eyes filled with tears, I still went on.
"But when he was home, it was like God himself was looking right down on us. The smile my father would give. He was so compassionate and loving. After the hard debts we had payed, he was there for the rest of my life. The hardest part, was leaving to work my career in Washington, leaving both my mom and dad behind. I had a feeling he knew he was dying, that's why he came to see me. To see me being proposed, to see me grow up. I bet he's looking down upon all of us today, and telling us not to mourn, but to be glad. I love my daddy, and I never expected him to leave so early, but he bestowed a gift as he left, my fiancé, Michael." I placed my hand on the casket with tears rolling down my cheeks. "I love you, daddy." I whispered and sat back down.
Months later
Each day, I come to his grave. Talking to him as if he were still alive, thinking maybe one day he'll answer.I know he's listening up in heaven. I can still hear his laugh, and see his smile. But I can't see it down on earth.
But every time I walk away from the grave, I hear him say.
"Don't worry, Blessing. I'm always here."
