I was woken up by the sound of something falling on my roof. I opened my eyes, still a little bit tired. After all, I partied until 4 in the morning. Of course, if you consider watching movies with your best friends a party. Yeah, we were that cool!

As I took in my surroundings, I noticed my best friends asleep around me. They were six people there. Catherine, my best friend since I was born. Addison, my other best friend in the whole wide world, who I haven't known for such a long time, but we got really close. And then there was Sophia, another best friend of mine. They were my "gang". And then, there were the boys. Finn, Dylan and Bryan. I know it may seem a little weird that my parents let the boys sleep in my room, but they've known them for a long time, and they trust them. We are all like brothers and sisters. Remembering why I had woken up, I got up, trying not to make any noises, I really didn't want to wake up my friends. They all looked so peaceful asleep. I got to the door as fast as I could, and got on a pair of shoes, ready to go and see what was on the roof. I know it seems crazy. I mean, it's December, and the girl wants to climb on the roof! But, in my defense, I had an obsession with the roof. Once, when I was 14, I had found there a necklace on my birthday, the 30th of November, so every year, I check the roof. It sounds really foolish, but I still hoped I'd find a guy standing on my roof, or something. And it wasn't that hard to get on our roof. We had stairs that took us to the attic, and from there, you had to climb out of a window, and you were on the roof. It wasn't even dangerous, because we had a flat roof, not the ones you can use as a slide. So, our attic wasn't even an attic. It was more like a room, only it was full with boxes, memories and stuff.

I made my way to the attic, remembering how scared I was when I first did this. It was a dare, for my birthday, and I wasn't one to refuse dares, so I climbed on the roof and found that gorgeous necklace. As I remembered how I found it, my hand went to my neck, where I was wearing it. I didn't take it off since the day I found it, and I didn't plan on doing it soon. It was a simple necklace, but something about it mesmerized me. It looked like a feather, and it was white. I smiled when I got to the window I had to climb out off. I got a box on which I knew I could climb, and pulled me out.

The cold air hit me like a memory. I didn't expect it to be so cold. It hadn't even snowed yet. But that wasn't what got my attention. It was the huge box in the middle of the roof that did.

It was made out of something that looked like wood, and it had a small white bow at the top of it. I got closer, trying not to slip. As I got closer, I realized it had a note stuck on it.

     "Happy Birthday, Daughter of Winter!"

Do I even have to say I had no idea what that meant. I thought I was for me, because it had just been my birthday, but I was not Daughter of Winter, or whatever was written there. I was December, Daughter of Anna and Chad, and I didn't know my parents were "The Winter".

I took off the note, and noticed a small carving, that looked just like the feather on my necklace. Same shape, same size. So, I did what any teenager that has ever read books would do. I took off the necklace and placed it on the box.

Nothing happened. And I started getting mad, because I really wanted to see what was inside that box. And I had no idea how to open it. So, I took it inside, and left it in the attic, while I went to search for something to open it up with. I was in the garage, searching through my father's stuff, when I heard someone clearing their throat. I turned around to face a really confused-looking Dylan. He was still in his pajamas, with his messy brown hair going in every direction.

"Morning, Dy!" I said excitedly with a smile on my face.

"Morning, Ember!" he said, but still watching me like I was a bomb about to explode.
