Chapter Six

Ratliff's POV

He had been home for over a month, but he still felt trapped.

No matter how hard he tried, his memories took over. Memories of that last day; the last day their lives were normal.

He had kissed her. He felt so happy that he leaned in and kissed her. It felt right. She smiled when their lips finally parted. He knew she felt the sparks too.

Then everything went wrong. It happened so fast he didn't know what hit him. Now he was reliving those memories every time he closed his eyes.

The bang. The impact. The sound of Rydel crying, begging for her life to be spared.

Then nothing. No sound, no sight. Nothing. That's how he felt now.

Sure he was awake, sure he would live. But if living meant being without Rydel, he would have rather died that day.

So instead he sat in his room, afraid to close his eyes. He would stare at old pictures of them, smiling at the life they would live together.

When she woke up.

Two months slowly past, and he still didn't leave his room. He didn't even visit her in the hospital. He knew he should, but as the days dragged on it became harder for him to breathe. He felt the walls closing in on him.

He had turned down several invitations to Thanksgiving dinner. Riker called him and practically begged for him to join them. He declined, kindly of course.

Then there was his family. They tried to get him to go to their dinner, but he said he would rather stay in his room.

He didn't want to hurt anyone, but he just wasn't ready to be okay just yet. The pain was still too much to handle.

Then his phone rang again. He looked at the caller, seeing it was Riker, and sent it right to voice mail. Then it rang again. And again, and again, and again until he finally answered it.

"Riker I'm not coming for dinner" he sighed into the phone.

"I know Ratliff, that's not why I'm calling" he sounded like he had been crying.

"What's wrong Riker?" he asked, afraid of what the response might be.

"It's Rydel" Riker cried into the phone.

Ratliff felt tears coming to his eyes. He didn't want to know what was wrong.

"She woke up Ratliff" Riker whispered, "She woke up."
