It was a warm October morning. Darcie was just getting up and stretched then her phone rang. ''Who's this?'' she asked herself. She picked up the phone and looked at the screen. It was only a number no name. She answered ''Hello?''. She heard a crackling sound and so she hung up thinking it was bad reception.
When she got out of the shower her phone rang again. It was the same number. ''Hello, who's this because im pretty sure you have the wrong number!'' she said raising her voice a little. ''No its right,'' said a male voice. ''Then who is this,'' There was that crackling sound again so she hung up.
Literally ten minutes later the same number again. She didn't know why she did but she answered the phone again. ''Who the fuck is this for the last time!!'' she shrieked. The person on the other end was laughing. ''Who is this before I call the cops!?!'' she was angry and scared now. The person on the other end laughed even harder. ''Call the cops,'' they taunted.''Im not playing,'' Darcie said. ''Okay fine" the person said catching their breath. ''Its Derrick,''
''I dont believe you! Don't call again!'' She screamed. ''Are you sc-'' she hung up the phone before 'Derrick' could finish his sentence.
She stood there nervous, scared and trembling all over but she somehow mangaged to get dressed and dragged herself down to the bus stop. On the way up there she thought about the person who had called this morning. What if it really was Derrick? Now she felt really stupid. She'd threathened to call the cops. Who even does that? She made up her mind she would ask him at school to see if it really was him.
Darcie walked into the gym at school. The first person she saw was Derrick. He waved and jogged over to her. ''Hey,'' he said. ''Hi,'' she said weakly. ''Whats wrong?'' he questioned. Darcie stared down at her feet. ''What? Did you get scared this morning?'' he asked. ''Was that you?'' she asked. ''Maybe it was,'' Derrick replied with a sly look on his face. ''You jackass!'' she hit him playfully. ''Im gonna call the cops,'' he mocked her voice from this morning. Darcie pushed him out of the way and began to walk away. ''I love the way she walks.

Darcie couldn't stop thinking about Derrick for the rest of the day. What's the real reason why he called her? She couldn't get him out of her mind. Every time she saw him she dropped everything just to watch his every move. When he was around she was blind to everything else going on around her. That day it felt like her whole life , her world , her heart was centered around Derrick. She had already written his name on her hand , arm and books. She didn't know what else to do. When she went to sleep she dreamt about him.

The next morning ,as Darcie got off the bus she noticed Derrick was talking to Sky. She was instantly attracted to him. She wanted to know what they had been talking about now more than ever. What if they were talking about her? What if Derrick was finally gonna make a move? What would she say if he did? She noticed that Derrick was staring right at her and pointing while he whispered something to Sky. Darcie decided to wait for Derrick to walk away before approaching Sky.
Sky had this weird look on her face as Darcie walked up. ''This is from Derrick and I know I probably shouldn't have read it but I did anyway. It is soo sweet!" She squealed. Darcie took the note and read it. There wasn't really much to read it was just a drawing. It said Darcie plus Derrick with hearts around the names. The lettering was in pink and purple. Derrick had attempted to write a note on the back but then scratched it out to the point where Darcie couldn't read what it said.
''It is sweet,'' she said. ''Thanks Derrick but no thanks .'' Darcie said hoping he wouldn't hear her. ''What?'' he called back. ''She said thanks but no thanks and now she's throwing it away.'' Sky yelled before Darcie could say anything.
When Darcie saw Derrick was gone she went through the recycling bin and found the drawing. She smoothed it out the best she could and regretted crumbling it up. She sat there staring at the paper. She wondered how a little piece of paper could mean so much to her. It felt like everything she ever wanted, needed, hoped for and wished for all relied on that one piece of paper. She felt it was a sign but what? What could it mean? Did Derrick want to be more than friends or was it just a temporary feeling? A million things were swarming around her mind now. That one piece of paper had changed everything.
