*Cheesily Enough... 10 years later*
"Daaaa dum da dum, daaaa dum da duuummmm, daaaa dum da daaa- Oh! Look Mummy! We're here! Mummy look!" My son Oliver drums on my shoulder, leaning forward and pointing out the windscreen.
"Yes darling, it's all very exciting, now sit properly in your seat please." I tell him for the hundredth time on this journey.
I hear a squeal come from the backseat, and look back to see my eldest, Athan giggling and Oliver frowning. "Mummy, he poured water on my seat again!" Oliver pouts.
"Athan, leave your brother alone, and one of you, please wake up Jiles, we'll be getting out any minute." I say in a stern voice.
Oliver punches his brother in the arm, and Athan rolls his eyes. We're back in Endora for the weekend, to attend a wedding.
I walk into the one of the rooms just next to the gardens. I lose my breath when Becky turns around to greet me, her dark hair tumbling down her white dress.
"Oh Becky! You look so beautiful!" I say in awe. She spins around with a grin. "You like it?" She asks. "I love it. I'm so glad you grew out your hair, it's stunning," I smile, putting my bag down, and shutting the door.
"I can't believe there's only 15 minutes left." She says, running a hand through the ends of her hair. "Mrs. Gilbert Grape." She sings. "Mrs Gilbert Grape!" She twirls around. I beam, "Now we're officially sisters."
Becky rolls her eyes. "We always were." She pulls me into a hug, and I shut my eyes.
I pull away, to look her up and down. "Come on, where are you shoes?" I ask, peering around the room.Arnie squeezes my hand as Becky's father walks her down the isle.
Gilbert holds out his hands for Becky to take as she stands opposite him.
I look at Arnie, in his suit, standing with the groomsmen, and smiled, gripping the flowers in my hand as I stood with he bridesmaids.
"Do you, Gilbert James Grape, take Rebecca Anne Miller to be your lawfully wedded wife? Do you swear before God and this company that you will love, honor, cherish, respect, and comfort her, in good times and bad, in sickness and in health? Do you promise to share your joys and sorrows, help her when she needs help and turn to her first when you need help, and forsaking all others, to be faithful to her alone?" The minister spoke.
"I do." Gilbert smiled at Becky.
"And do you, Rebecca Anne Miller, take Gilbert James Grape to be your lawfully wedded husband? Do you swear before God and this company that you will love, honor, cherish, respect, and comfort him, in good times and bad, in sickness and in health? Do you promise to share your joys and sorrows, help him when he needs help and turn to him first when you need help, and forsaking all others, to be faithful to him alone?" The minister repeated.
"I do." Becky looked into Gilbert's eyes lovingly.
"May we have the rings?" The minister asked.
Athan, who stood behind, handed Becky's ring to Gilbert, and Melanie, Amy's daughter handed Gilbert's ring to Becky.Gilbert and Becky exchanged the rings, and the minister took a breath, "I now pronounce you husband, and wife. You may kiss the bride." He said.
Gilbert held Becky's hands and kissed her sweetly.
The crowd cheered happily in celebration of the happy couple. That night, after the reception and send off of the newlyweds, Arnie, Amy, Ellen, Leon and I headed back to the house, where we were all staying overnight for the wedding. Amy and her husband Brian still lived in the house with Melanie, who was 7 years old.
Once inside, my boys ran off to explore the garden, and I took Arnie's hand. "Let's go put our things away, hon." I said, leading him toward the stairs, luggage in my other hand.
It was surreal, going back up to Arnie's old room, and sitting on the same small creaky bed, now with new white sheets and decorated as a guest room.
"It looks sooo different in here Janie." Arnie said, shaking his head. "But it still feels the same." Arnie added. "I know what you mean." I nodded in agreement.
I sat on the bed, putting my suitcase on the floor.
"Come, sit." I patted the spot next to me, and Arnie sat down and scrunched up his nose. "Oh, I think I'm sitting on the part of the mattress that Phillipe chewed off when he was a puppy." Arnie frowned. I laughed, imagining how that old ball of fur was enjoying the neighbour's place."Isn't it amazing to think, all those years ago, when we were so young... what we imagined our lives would be like..." I said, closing my eyes.
"We used to tell each other stories of sea creatures and pie, and all sorts of shenanigans." I said, smiling as I remembered.
"We had lots of fun." Arnie said. "We did, didn't we?" I looked at him.
"I'm glad that being with you wasn't just an imagination." Arnie said, and I pecked him on the lips. "Me too."
Arnie put his arm around my shoulders and I rested my head against him.Little footsteps came up the stairs towards us, "Mummy! Look what Ollie can do!" Jiles came running in, with Oliver right behind him, crossing his eyes with a big grin on his face.
"Wow! How'd you do that?" Arnie exclaimed, and he smiled at me. "Just like this, Dad, you just put your finger out in front of you and then you pull it to your nose." Oliver explained, demonstrating as he did so.
Jiles tried to copy him, but couldn't quite do what his brother was doing."Janie! Arnie!" Amy yelled up the stairs, "Dinner!"
"Come on then you silly seahorses." I laughed at them, and followed Arnie out into the hall.
"Uncle Gilbert! Aunty Becky!" Oliver yelled as he sped down the stairs, and I frowned in confusion, weren't they supposed to be on their honeymoon?
"Did you have a nice trip?" I heard Leon say.
"We decided to spend our honeymoon here. With family." Becky replied.
I smiled up at Arnie, "Shall we?" I asked him. "We shall." He said, taking my hand as we walked down the stairs. And I suppose there's nothing left to say, as we all sat down, all 12 of us, and ate dinner together as a family.
THE END.
Note: I waited so long so it would really feel like 'years' later.
I hope you enjoy this short, yet sweet ending!
