Maybe Stevie was right, Lindsey wondered to himself. Why get themselves into so much trouble; divorcing, getting married again, while expecting a baby? He just wanted her to have a real wedding, with a beautiful, romantic proposal before that. Now knowing Stevie was pregnant again, Lindsey highly doubted he would have come to her with his idea if had already known. Of course she wouldn't agree. Their baby was their number one priority right now. Still, for some reason Lindsey couldn't let it go. His feelings were a little hurt. He thought she would be excited that he'd want to go to great lengths to make her happy. He didn't question her love for him, he knew she loved him, but he had to wonder what type of love she had for him. Was she simply comfortable with him? Was it... safe being with him? Was that all?
Sitting down on a bench in the park not too far from their home, Lindsey took out a small box out of his pocket. While Bella was happily sniffing around, Lindsey just stared at the ring. He put a lot of thought into picking one out, he couldn't give her just any ring. It had to somehow reflect her and he truly thought this one did. Well, it was no use now...
"Nervous to ask?" Lindsey heard a woman's voice, as he looked up, his eyes meeting ones of a complete stranger. "I noticed you looking at that for a good while. It's beautiful, she'd be crazy to say no."
"I'm already married. She also already said no."
Frowning, the woman asked if she could sit down, Lindsey shrugged and nodded. "How does that work?"
"It's a long story. We got married under, uh... different circumstances compared to most people. I wanted to divorce then marry her again, do things the right way, but... she doesn't think that's necessary." Lindsey glanced at the woman. "Why am I telling you this, though, I don't know."
"Kathrine." She held out her hand, shaking it, Lindsey introduced himself as well. "Have you thought about why she thinks getting married again isn't needed?"
"I don't know really. I guess, because she's pregnant. She doesn't want the extra stress."
"Or maybe she's afraid."
"What could she possibly be afraid of?"
"If I were her, I'd be terrified that you wanted to leave me and you weren't man enough to simply admit it, tell me the truth. I would be terrified that you found someone else and you don't know how to tell me, so you thought this would be the best way, which would make you a complete asshole. I'd be terrified that if you haven't, once the divorce is finalized, you'd start thinking, what if there are better options?"
Lindsey took a moment to process it all and it made so damn much sense. Why was he always thinking about himself? He knew Stevie well enough to know she never opened up that easily, not to him, not to anyone. He should have approached it differently, he should have told her it was okay to talk to him, to tell him how she truly felt.
"There are no better options." He said after a while. "She makes me happy. When I'm with her, I think I have everything. She is my everything."
Smiling, Kathrine shook her head, sighing. "You men don't understand us at all."
"Apparently we do not." Lindsey laughed, shrugging his shoulders. "But you're so damn complicated."
"But you love us."
"Couldn't live without." Now smiling slightly, Lindsey stood up, whistling for Bella to come back to him as he bent down to put the leash on again. "Well, Kathrine, thank you for solving my marital problems."
"Any time. I come here a lot with my little one." She scratched the top of her puppy's head. "Maybe we'll see each other again."
"No disrespect, but I really don't think we will. Thank you, again."
"No problem."
They said goodbye and Lindsey turned to go home, anxious to see Stevie. He wanted to apologize for how he reacted, he wanted to tell her it was okay.
He noticed that the lights were out, once he came back, assuming Stevie cried herself to sleep... Cursing himself, Lindsey entered the house, setting Bella free, about to run upstairs, but he stopped, hearing...
"Linds?"
He thought it came from the living room, so that's where he went, finding Stevie on the couch, with a blanket, just lying there. "Baby, what are you doing down here? You should go to bed. This isn't comfortable enough for you." He said, kneeling in front of her.
"You came back." As if she didn't hear a thing, reaching to touch his face. "Oh, Linds, you came back!"
"Of course I did." He smiled, leaning in to press a kiss to her lips. "I'm so sorry, Steph. I was acting like such an idiot." Shaking his head, he looked away. "I was only thinking about my own feelings, not taking into consideration yours." Deciding to leave the Katherine part out, he continued. "I thought it all over and I want you to know that what I suggested wasn't because I am hiding something from you, as in another woman... I don't want to divorce you to go to someone else, I really just wanted to do things the right way. I don't need anyone else as long as I've got you, baby. I love you so much." He smiled, his hand disappearing under the blanket, as he moved it to rest on her middle. "And I can't believe we're expecting again. I have everything I need right here." Kissing her again, he added. "If you don't want to marry me again, that's totally fine."
Tears in her eyes, Stevie asked somewhat scared to hear his answer. "Are you sure?"
"Absolutely. But I still want to give you something." He pulled back, searching in his pocket again. "I'd like it if you wore this. Please?" He offered her the ring, waiting. She just held out her hand, allowing him to put it on, next to her wedding ring. "I love you."
"I love you, too." She said, smiling sweetly at him, as he looked at her beautiful face, falling in love all over again.
