"I should probably go." Lindsey said to Carol, standing up. "I'll call you."
"Lindsey, you don't have to do this. I already made that clear. Obviously, she's not okay with this."
"But there's a chance-"
"Exactly." Carol cut him off. "There's only a chance. I know what you're thinking. If you don't stick around, but the baby turns out to be yours, I won't let you be a part of their life. That's not true. I just don't want to be the cause of any problems."
Lindsey was slightly surprised. Carol was still very young, but she seemed to be making a lot of sense. Not really sure of what to say, Lindsey just gave a small nod of his head and walked out the door.
Leaving the building, Lindsey's eyes instantly fixated on Stevie, leaning against the locked car, with her head hung low and her arms wrapped around her middle. The image broke his heart, but in all honesty, he didn't see what he was doing as being wrong.
Approaching her, Lindsey brought a hand up to her face, tilting her chin up, looking her in the eyes for a moment, before pulling her into his arms. She looked hurt and he hated that. Stevie didn't respond to his arms around her, she remained like she was, but she didn't push him away either. After a moment, Lindsey pulled back slightly, pressing a kiss to her temple, as he then unlocked the car and opened the door for her.
Once they arrived home, Stevie, without a word, made her way up the stairs and lay down, curling up into a ball. Contemplating for a minute, Lindsey decided to leave her alone. Instead, he went to his home studio and picked up his acoustic guitar.
Was he wrong? Maybe he shouldn't be doing this after all. On the other hand, he just wanted to do the right thing, he wanted to help out Carol, especially now that he'd seen her living conditions. At the end of the day, Stevie would always be the one he came home to. Why was it so hard for her to see that?
Unsure of how much time had passed, Lindsey put away the instrument and decided to check on Stevie, only to find her in the kitchen and not in bed anymore. He stood back, watching her for a moment, she was making dinner, which rarely ever happened now. Entering, Lindsey made his presence known, clearing his throat loudly, before taking a seat at the table. Stevie did not react to that, continuing what she was doing.
"Are we going to talk about it?" Lindsey asked at last, seeing as she was perfectly fine with staying quiet.
"There seems to always be something that we need to talk about lately." Stevie said, without much emotion in her voice.
"Baby, please..."
"Please what, Lindsey?" She suddenly twirled around to face him. "If only you had seen the look on your face, as you were touching another woman's belly, because her baby moved, while I was sitting right there, having to witness it happening!"
"Well..." He tried, but he didn't get a chance to speak.
"You said you wanted to help her. I didn't realize doting on her meant that."
"Doting? I wasn't doing that and you know it! I mean, yes, I did get excited. What's so bad about that?"
"You just don't get it, do you?" Stevie shook her head slightly, sighing. "Lindsey, you saw me, when I lost the baby. You knew how crushed I was. Getting pregnant again and so soon after, I thought you were going to be with me every minute of every day, that you will help me, that you'll do everything you can to ensure we get to welcome our baby into this world. When I found out I was carrying your child, I didn't think I was going to have to share you with some... I don't even know, some woman you'd been having sex for a couple of months. How do you not see that it's hurting me? I know we've talked about it, but it makes me think that you have feelings for her. You don't even know for sure if that's your baby and you're jumping into it with both feet."
"But that's because-"
"And that's a bullshit reason!" Yet again, she didn't let him speak. "Saying over and over again, this baby might be mine, isn't a good enough reason to leave your wife, whose pregnant with your child, in my opinion. I tried, I thought I could let this happen, but I can't, Lindsey. I just can't."
"So, what do you suggest then, Stevie? What you said before, I didn't know you felt that way because of the miscarriage and my heart breaks for you, hearing you, but I keep telling you the only reason why I'm doing it and you don't believe me."
"And I won't believe you, Lindsey, because to me, that's not normal. You shouldn't want to go to her. If she needed something from you, she could call you, that's fine, but that's also as far as I can go. You, getting up early every other morning to go to her, because you want to - that's not okay with me."
"You're saying then, that I should just let her go through the whole pregnancy by herself? That once the baby is here, I should demand a paternity test and only knowing for sure, I should be around?" Lindsey asked, a bit angry. He thought Stevie was being completely unreasonable.
Composing herself, Stevie took a few deep breaths, knowing that what she was about to say, could make the whole situation so much worse. "That's exactly what I think you should do." She held up her hand, seeing as he opened his mouth. "Don't leave her alone completely, but go to her, when she actually needs something. Lindsey, by bonding with that child, it also makes you have some sort of relationship with her and to me that's really painful. I wish you could realize that."
"Remember, when you were pregnant the other time and we weren't sure whose baby you were carrying, I told you I would love them no matter what? You were okay with that, weren't you?"
Stevie's mouth was agape. "That's a completely different thing. You were with me, we were married. You told me you were in love with me."
Lindsey went quiet, realizing now, that might not have been the best argument.
With tears clouding her vision, Stevie shook her head in disbelief. "I can't believe you've just said that." Lindsey gripped her arm, when she was walking out of the kitchen, but she pushed him away. "No, Lindsey, don't. Don't touch me, don't talk to me. Leave me alone." She wiped away angry tears, before locking herself up in the bedroom.
"You fucking idiot..." Lindsey cursed at himself, letting out a frustrated sigh.
