Chapter Ten

What the hell did I just do?

I look down at my hands, which seem to be normal yet I could have sworn I felt such a tingling sensation pass through them just moments before Adonis collapsed on me. Had I seriously just taken his life? I did not want to kill him but in that moment all I thought was how I wanted him to stop but I didn't mean stop breathing. I quickly put my hands over his body, trying to heal him but it doesn't work. I try again but still nothing.

What had I been thinking when I brought Mallow back? I had been crying and worried sick. Mallow had meant the world to me but Adonis I feel nothing for. Maybe that's why it wouldn't work. I have to think of someone who I feel some kind of compassion for. My mother. I thought of my mother. How much I missed her and wish I could see her again.

The tingly feeling came rushing back into my hands and I saw it this time. It was a light glow that descended from my hands unto Adonis's body. Suddenly Adonis's heart starts beating and he quickly sits up with a gasp. For a moment he looks around disoriented.

Then as if realization kicks in, he looks up at me in great fear. "Stay away from me."

He quickly gets on his horse and rides off. Great how was I going to get back now?

I look around the field, wondering which way we had come. There is a trail that he took that leads into the forest but I am hesitant to go that way considering it is dark, cold, and creepy looking.  But I know it is the only way back to the palace. So with a deep breath, I suck up my fear and stalk off into the forest.

The trees are tall as skyscrapers and many overlap each other making it harder for me to see any clearings ahead. The branches also overlap and curl under like long arms and the little branches resembled fingers that were reaching out to grab me. I think for a moment that something is touching me and I almost scream but I turn to see that it is just a branch. Maybe it is just my imagination but I don't bother to concentrate more on the trees for it is cold with the wind whistling all around me. The cold is biting, almost numbing and it seems to become even chillier as I walk deeper into the forest and the eerie sounds increase.

I fold up my arms and press forward despite the eerie sounds of howling wolves or coyotes and chirping birds. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my, seem to race through my mind.

The little light that came from the outskirts of the forest starts to fade now causing new shadows and dark patches around me. I try to ignore all the eerie creatures that surround me and push on faster. The further I get into the forest, the darker my surroundings become and before I know it, I am surrounded by fog, more trees, and piercing sounds of creepy nocturnal animals. I look up at the sky hoping to see a star or two to guide me through this murky forest but there is no light whatsoever. The sky, which is usually full of stars and the bright moon, seems to be hidden from the massive amount of dark clouds that I could have sworn wasn't there a few moments ago.

I shrug and keep going though I desperately want to just turn back around. It seems like a never-ending forest and the deeper I go into it the more trees seem to surround me. I don't remember the forest being this long when Adonis rode us through the forest.

Then out of nowhere, the howling noises and the wind stops completely though the cold becomes icy. The fog increases becoming murkier and I suddenly see vapor coming from my breath.

Just like that, a dark cloud descends from the sky and a dark figure approaches. I start walking backwards, my heart racing as I remember what Cove said about the demons. Several dark figures descend from the sky and approach as well.
