When we reached the kitchen Mia and Ellie were sitting at the kitchen table, sipping from styrofoam cups. A few colored bags were strewn across the wooden surface. The bubbly blonde sorted the bags, peaking through a few of them occasionally.
"Okay," She squeaked. "The stuff on the left is yours, the stuff on the right is mine, and the bag in the middle is for your boys."
The smile on Mia's face was practically audible. I knew well enough she enjoyed how 'her boys' sounded aloud in her ears, and it felt just as nice to be special to someone. Mia hummed cheerily, not bothering to reply to her friend as she took both her bags and ours and quickly turned around towards the doorway. As soon as her eyes fell on us the corners of her mouth flew up jubilantly.
"Hi guys!" She greeted with a brief wave. My lips mocked hers, curving upwards. "Hello, darling. How was shopping?" I inquired.
Mia giggled, placing a small shiny bag in my hands as she spoke.
"Good. We were at this cute little antique store uptown and I just kinda thought about you guys. I don't really know what it is about it, but it feels like you were ment to have it or something." She explained with a heat rising in her face. Brian, Roger, and Deacy's heads crowded over my shoulders, their eyes gawking at the item in my possession like a priceless piece of art. The bassist dug his fingers into my back impatiently.
"Well," Deacy said. "Open it already!" I shoved him off (not like that, pervert) and gently maneuvered my hands through the tissue paper. The tips of my fingers touched the cool metal objects at the bottom of the bag.
"Oh my god, hurry up! It's taking something out of a bag, not the bloody SAT!" Roger whined.
I narrowed my eyes at the blonde causing a muffled snort to escape Brian's lips. Without another moment I pulled out the mystery items.
"Wow...Mia, it's...they're beautiful." I stammered, my eyes as big as saucers. Laying in the palm of my hand were four shiny plated bracelets with a charm placed in the middle. The bead was very odd; it almost swirled with a variety colors in the same pattern. As I handed each of my friends a bracelet, the patterns changed gradually. We put them on, making the moon-shaped center glimmer and shine. Brian smiled the biggest, flicking his wrist and making the charm reflect off the lights in the room. "These are so cool!" He gushed. "It looks like you put an actual piece of the moon in it."
Ellie rolled her eyes. "You were right," She said to Mia. "He's totally geeking over it."
Brian scoffed, making the rest of us giggle. "I'm not 'geeking out', Elizabeth." He retorted. The blonde abruptly set down her cup and lunged at the guitarist. She pinned his arms above his head as he fell underneath her. John went to go pull her off of Brian, but Mia grabbed his arm.
"Let it happen." She said simply. If looks could kill, the curly haired chap would've been struck dead by lightning right then.
"Call me 'Elizabeth' one more time and you will suffer the wrath that is me." Ellie growled before getting up and reaching for her cup like nothing happened. "That goes for everyone." She added with a nod to the others. Mia chuckled simply and made her way over to the staircase with the rest of her things. "Well I'm glad you like your gifts. I'll be going to put this away and then we can plan on something to do." She said as she disappeared into the upper level of the house. I looked over towards the kitchen counters and saw Ellie throw open the cupboards and pull out a plethora of ingredients and boxes. Deacy looked excitedly at the counter top and asked, "Are you going to be making something?"
She looked over and smiled flawlessly at him. "Might as well, you guys are probably starving. You can pick what's for lunch today if you'd like?" Ellie suggested. John grinned happily and skipped next to her. While they picked out what they needed to create Deacy's food choice, Brian was still standing in his spot near the door way, admiring the astrological bracelet on his bony wrist. You wouldn't have been able to tell he had been tackled moments ago by the look on his face.
His eyes were heavily concentrated on the swirling charm, deep in thought.
"This is quite the peculiar little thing, isn't it?" He asked to no one in particular. I smiled shortly and looked over his shoulder to watch the multitude of psychedelic colors dance together rhythmically. "Yes, they're very unique." I agreed. He kept his gaze on his bracelet, not bothering to look up at me. I patted his shoulder gently before walking over into the living room and sitting on the leather couch. Roger sat in the recliner while flipping through a Cosmopolitan magazine. His eyes widened every so often, and if you've ever skimmed through one yourself you'd know why. I chuckled and hummed to myself until Mia came back downstairs empty handed. She plopped onto the open spot next to me and smiled. A sudden realization of the phone call I had answered hours ago had gone unsaid. "Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that you got a call from your grandfather. I don't think he was too happy." I said. Her eyes grew a bit and stood back up. "Fuck," Mia muttered, walking quickly into the kitchen. Despite knowing better, I listened closely to the hushed conversation in the adjacent room.
"Hey, Grandpa."
A short pause.
"Everything's fine, why?"
From the corner of my eye I could see her lips curve downwards.
"No, I'm not having random boys over! The person who answered the phone must of been my friend from the university. I let him grab my chemistry books and notes since he lives near the house and was going home to study, but forgot his stuff at school. You probably rang me when he was over and thought it was important." Mia lied. Fairly convincing on her part, but I knew the truth. A sigh escaped her lips shortly afterwards.
"Okay, love you, too. I'll see you on Christmas. Bye." She said, and hung the phone back on its receiver. Before she came back into the living room I flipped on the television, pretending to watch some sort of news channel. Mia sat back down and I looked at her with interest. "How'd your talk go?" I asked.
She exhaled outwardly. "Well, better than most talks we have. My grandpa's always been a cooky guy and overly protective on occasion. But he's my only real family, so I don't mind it much." Mia said. I nodded and slung my arm around her. "So, have any big plans this evening?" I asked her. She chuckled softly.
"Not really, we can do whatever you want." Mia replied.
Roger looked up from his magazine and cocked his head to one side.
"Mia, what's a Miley Cyrus?" He asked curiously.
"She's a reptilian from another planet. Now put that paper down before you kill more of your brain cells." She answered, swiftly taking the magazine from his hands and tossing it in the small trash can next to the coffee table. Roger frowned and walked towards the kitchen. "I wonder what Bri's doing..." He mumbled as he disappeared into the other room. I laughed and Mia looked up at me. "Anyways, is there anything special you want to do?" She asked again. My eyes cast up towards the ceiling, wracking my mind for ideas. "Not that I can think of, dear. It's all up to you." I replied. She sat in thoughtful silence and bit her lip every so often. "We could just hang out in my room? If you want to."
I smiled and pulled her up by the hand with me. "I wouldn't like anything better." I said, and we walked quietly up the stairs.
