Chapter 12:Muffled Embers

One of the GreenCoat turned around and stared up at me.

His eyes were smiling. He had a bright smile.

His face was handsome. His hooked nose and chocolate eyes fit perfectly on his face. He was a bit darker but it was his heritage. Indian.

"Hey newcomer."

He patted the spot next to him. The girl that sat next to the spot looked at me also. Her red hair matched the fire.

She didn't say anything to me. I sat down carefully not bumping into anyone.

Everyone went back to their conversations and soon I learned the names of the 7 GreenCoats.

Rixon was the name of the Indian guy, Madison was the name of the name of the red head. The other 5, Carson, Omar, Lilian, Daphne and Paco.

Carson had his smart quirks adding statements to the end of sentences. Omar was in the back flirting with Daphne. Lilian and Paco were siblings. They are started speaking in a foreign language and they laughed. I later found out that they were speaking vietnamese.

Mike sat just looked at Marie arms. They were still around his muscular arms. She was leaning against him looking at his eyes.

I felt a sense of disgust. Did she know that he almost kissed me? Maybe he does it to other girls too.

His eyes flickered at me.

He cleared his throat and everyone got quiet.

I felt a sense of security but I let my guard down.

"Today we have a trespasser. She manage to climb over the fence, and I know her intention was pure curiosity. She knows about the wall and she wants to get over it.", he held his eyes at me,"This makes her dumb. She was the very reason why Stacy and Callie Cadaver died."

My shoulders slumped. His voice got very cold. I connected the dots. Callie was Ms . Cadaver.

His eyes swirled with anger.

"Which is why tomorrow morning she'll be going back into the city."

I stared at him. No. Aspen died because of this. I will not go back empty handed and live a lonely life. I needed a reason to keep moving.

"No! I can't go back...not like this!", my words tumbled out.

He raises an eyebrow. I felt someone's hand touching my arm. It was comforting.

"What do you mean?", I could hear the rise of curiosity in his voice.

I gritted my teeth. I closed my eyes. "Aspen was electrocuted on the fence. And if he hadn't come along with me when I asked him to, he would still be alive."

I blinked 2 times. It was out. I said it aloud.

Instead of reassuring me all I got from Mike was pity.

He said nothing.

"Please don't make me go home.", I begged.

I looked at everyone's face. They were all quiet.

Mike rested his head in his hands." You don't realize what we're doing out here."

I stared at him. I don't. I don't even know what I'm doing here.

"We're trying to get over the wall too."

I opened my mouth." Then why can't I come along?"

He stared up at me." Because it's dangerous."

I started to protest but everyone started to get up. The shuffled around and left the campsite. It was quiet and only I and Marie was there.

She looked at me as she stomped out the rest of the flames.

"I understand why Mike would not want you to go. It's not how you expect it to be..out there."

Her tone of voice made me widen my eyes.

She got up and left.

She's been out there before. She's not from here...none of the others were either.

Mike was not from here either. I swallowed hard. They're trying to go home. Had they become GreenCoats to gather information?

I stood up suddenly. The box...it's a foreign object also.

I ran towards the way Mike had left to.

The box might be something important and it was mine. It could be a way or a clue from Stacy. And I could give it to them if they'd let me come along.

Blackmail is wrong but yet it's so right.

Guilt rose but I pushed it down.
