Our new campsite sat in a clearing of the forest right next to the wall. Omar,Rixon, Madison, Mike and Marie sat huddled around a circle.
I scanned around for Paco and my heart drops.
He was the person that fell besides my yesterday. I turn my head towards Lilian. She was still holding onto me.
Her eyes were glistening with tears. She didn't cry. At that moments she became my role model. She still smiles and was still positive even though..even though..her brother died.
I hand her the box on impulse. She curls her fingers around it and we sit down.
Everyone was tired and bruised.
I gasped when I saw Daphne's bandaged face. There was a huge bloodstained bandage going over when her eye was. She had lost an eye.
Everyone else said nothing. They didn't cry. These people were stronger.
I scoot over to Daphne. She stares at me with her wide eye.
"I'm a doctor. Was. I can help you keep from infection."
She nods.
I lay her on the ground and everyone watches. I check her wound. It was gruesome but I worked through it, picking away pebbles and debris that had landed it the spot. She screamed everytime. I saw Omar holding on her hand.
His eyes were glistening with tears too.
Finally I ripped off a piece of shirt to wrap her up again.
There was now missing cloth on the left side of my shirt. Sacrifices.
We all sit back in a circle again and Lilian clears her throat.
"The box has opened. It has pieces of paper in it. Since it's from Stacy and Callie there's a huge chance that it shows the way out. Stacy and Callie has been in and out of here twice...for us."
She sighs." Now finally we are old enough and we have enough information on how to over throw the goverment..we shall leave..let us hope."
Lilian reaches in and unravels the papers.
Her eyes flicker up at mine. She hands it to me." Since Stacy gave it to you..Lyra...I think it's best that you read it."
Someone whispers but no one says anything. They trust me.
My eyes focus on the paper and my mind slowly filled with information. At the end of the first paper I gasp.
I'm almost so thrown back that I almost drop it. I steadied myself and continued reading.
I felt everyone's stares. They helped me along.
