Chapter 18

I herd Kian hum as he walked down the stairs and into the kitchen. I was sitting at the table on my phone and I watched him as he poured himself a bowl of Lucky Charms.

"Hello my young friend," he said as he sat down.

I had never seen Kian high before, I don't think I've ever seen anyone high before.

"Hello Kian, how are you feeling," I asked.

"I'm just fine," he said with a smile and a wink.

"Do you want to take a drive with me?" He asked.

"I don't think it's very safe for you to be driving right now," I told him with a laugh.

"Well you can do it then," he said with a smile.

"Where the hell do you want to go," I asked him, standing up.

"I'd like to show you something," he said, getting up and walking out.

I rolled my eyes and followed him out. He picked up his car keys and threw them at me. I caught them and reminded him that I wasn't a very good driver but he told me it was fine.

"Where are we going Kian," I asked him.

"To the mental hospital," he said slowly.

"What! Why are we going to a mental hospital," I asked him in shock.

"Just drive woman, take a left at the end of the road," he told me.

I just laughed at him and started to drive. We didn't talk much during the ride. It was just him giving me directions until we were finally there.

We stepped out of the car and walked toward the large building. It didn't look scary like in the movies. It was quite happy looking actually. I read the the name at the top out loud.

"Bensons children's hospital. Kian why are we here," I asked him.

"Just go inside and you'll see,"he told me, so I did what he asked and I walked inside.

It was colourful with paintings of rainbows and flowers all over the walls.

"Oh hello Kian," the woman at the front desk said cheerily.

"Hi Dona," Kian said smiling.

"We weren't expecting you today, but I'm sure Emily will be happy to see you," Dona said.

Emily? Emily!
Im about to find out who Emily is.

Dona and Kian started to walk down a long hall so I followed. They came to a door that had the name Emily Johnston on it and it was opened.

"Hi honey," Kian said, looking down at a little girl with short brown hair and the cutest pink sun dress.

" Kian!," she shouted and she ran over and gave him a hug.

I was starting to put things together to in my head and I realised that Emily wasn't a girl the Kian was seeing, she was his sister. And I really hoped the nobody knew than he had just been high.

"Who is she," Emily asked pointing up at me. I laughed and bent down next to Kian.

"My name is Riley," I said putting my hand out.

She shook it and giggled. Kian looked at me and I looked at him. He smiled and sat down on Emily's bed. She continued to hug and play with him and then she turned round to show Kian a painting but stopped when she saw me.

"Kian who is that," she asked slowly walking away from me.

"That's Riley," he told her.

I was confused because I had already told her my name.

"Why is she here?" She asked.

" I wanted her to meet you, it's okay she's nice," Kian told her.

"Okay," she said unsure.

"My name is Emily," she said.

I smiled at her but I was still unsure on what was going on.

"I'm going to go get some water, do you want anything?" He asked her, standing up.

"No, I'm fine," she told him.

He started to walk towards the door and told me to come with him. We began to stroll down the hall to the cafeteria.

"She had something wrong with her brain when she was born," he started to say, " it causes her to forget a lot of things like who people are and stuff. It didn't start to properly happen until she was three. She was taken her after a while, she is seven now and honestly I think it's getting worse. I love her so much and I know that one day she won't remember who I am,".

Tears started to form in Kian's eyes. I had never seen him like this before and I couldn't think of anything else to do but hud him. We stood there for a while, until Kian got his strength back and started to walk again. We sat down at a small table and I handed him some water.

"I don't understand, why does she live here and not where you live now?," I asked.

"We wanted to but the doctors said that it wouldn't be good to take her to a whole new state because it would confuse her," he told me.

"Is Emily one of the reasons why you wanted to come back here?," I said.

"Yeah, when my dad got his new job in California we had no time to come down and see her. I just wanted to spend some time with her before she forgot me," he said, looking down at his water.

As much as I tried to hold back the tears I could feel them well up in my eyes and trickle down my cheek.

"Fuck," I whispered under my breath as I whipped the tears away, " I'm so sorry Kian, I had no idea about all of this".

"Don't be, it's not your fault, it's not anybody's fault," he said taking my hand.

We went back and talked to Emily for a while. She was the sweetest girl I had ever met and all I could feel for the rest of the day was sadness.
