Since Keiji was still new at the job and the hospital, he didn't really have much to do. Usually he'd just sit in and aid the senior doctors, or be at his desk writing reports all day. Neither applied that day.
He had gotten off work early that day, his higher ups released him since there wasn't a lot of a to do. So he decided to go visit his old high school, where his lover worked.
How nostalgic, he thought as he entered the gym that had the sound of squeaking sneakers, yells, and a room that smelled like air salonpas. Peeking through a small window, he saw Koutarou screeching at teenagers that were running through the gym. He watched there for a few minutes, hoping that Keiji would notice and invite him in.
He did not.
Keiji entered the gym awkwardly, hoping to not disturb the high schooler's practice.
That did not work.
"AGGHHKKAASHII!!!" Koutarou hollered jumping up and waving at him. Once he landed on the ground again, he jogged towards Keiji.
"Koutarou," Keiji greeted quietly, trying to ignore the stares of the volleyball players that had faltered in their practice to watch the two's interaction.
"Why are you here?" Koutaroi asked excitedly.
Keiji sent a helpless smile. "I couldn't resist the volleyball's wrath."
Koutarou grinned hearing that. He turned away from Koutarou to look at the players on the court.
"HEY HEY HEY EVERYONE!!" He called out with the intention to get everyone's attention, not like he didn't have it before. "Guys, meet Akaashi Keiji, he's a highschool kouhai of mine and was the official setter on our volleyball team years ago," he introduced. A chorus of greetings came from the volleyball players
"Thank you for having me here," Keiji said politely, and bowing.
One of the boys with a slightly wider face, and a bright smile stepped forward. He oddly reminded Keiji of a certain captain of a rival of heirs back in high school. The boy offered his hand forward, and Keiji took it shaking it. "Welcome, Akaashi-san, I'm Norio Abe, the captain of the team," the boy said proudly. Keiji nodded and smiled, "Pleased to be your acquaintance."
Koutarou clapped his hands, after they were done with their introduction, and turned to Keiji. "Wanna game?" he grinned mischieviously.
Keiji's eyes widened. "Oh no, no, no, I'm out of practice, and I'm sure these youngsters would want to get back to their game."
"What do you guys say?" Koutarou aksed turning to the mass of boys, some who were taller than both Koutarou and himself. "How would you guys like to play against my best setter? I mean they all say experience beats youth, how would you guys like to prove them wrong!" Koutarou cheered throwing his fist into the air. the crowd of youthful boys cheered. Oh dear, Koutaou breeded a whole team of younger Koutarous - just as loud. Keiji sighed facepalming, but a little part of him really did want to play a game or two. After all, he wasn't able to contribute to the college team at all because of his major. And now that I'm back, I might as well join that group Koutarou, Kuroo, and Kenma are in, the group of adults with a passion for volleyball who still gather once a week, in most cases.
Well then, lets see how much I embarrass myself, he thought as he jogged onto the court, five more individuals already waiting on the court. Koutarou tossed him a colored jersey that corresponded with the side of the court he was on. Koutarou got to the other side of the court, his eyes burning brightly. Another wave of nostalgia washed over Keiji as he remembered how they would always have these kinds of practice matches back in high school, and how Koutarou always wanted to be on the opposing side of Keiji. Whether it was to show off a senpai's skill or that he really saw Keiji as a rival, he never found out.
A student on the side of the court playing referee blew the whistle. "Match 1 of 1!"

Keiji collapsed onto the wall of the gymnasium. Koutarou bent over on his knees panting just as hard next to him. They had forfeit from the game a few minutes ago, age, once again overpowering on their lives.
Koutarou sat down on the ground, sweat shining on his forehead and forearms. It was a surprisingly close game, and a game the two adults took a little too seriously. But in the end, Koutarou's team had won by one point. "Good game, Keiji," he said grinning.
Keiji managed a small smile back. "Good game, Bokuto-san."
