it hurts

Patrick watched. Patrick watched that girl flirt with Pete. and then Patrick watched Pete flirt back.

it hurt.

Patrick sat across the classroom, next to his friend Joe. Joe was talking to Andy on the table behind them, but Patrick wasn't bothering to turn around. he couldn't stop watching Pete and that girl flirt. he watched her smile at him, and he watched pete smile right back.
pete used to smile at Patrick like that.
and now Patrick watched Pete give the same smile to that girl.

it hurt.

Patrick thinks her name is Meagan. she's beautiful, she could be a model. everything about her is near flawless, so Patrick understands why Pete is flirting back.
but that didn't stop the aching pain in Patrick's chest.

it hurt.

Pete and Patrick used to sit next to each other in English. it was the best. Pete used to ask Patrick how to spell things, (that Pete already knew how to spell) just so he could talk to patrick. Patrick would tell him, and then Pete would argue that he swore it's spelt another way, and Patrick would argue back because he knows that's how it's spelt, English is his only good subject. and the two boys would argue back and forth, and yet although they were arguing, they could not stop smiling at each other. all the while they were bickering, they would not be able to stop smiling, and Patrick would occasionally giggle and Pete would not be able to stop staring at Patrick while they talked, because the way Patrick's eyes lit up when he was passionate and determined to prove he was right (and also determined to prove Pete wrong) ,was one of the most beautiful things pete had ever saw. Pete and Patrick would look forward to those lessons more than anything. they shared the majority of the rest of their lessons together as well, and they would constantly be stealing glances at each other in those lessons too. and when they caught each other, they would blush and look away and pretend it never happened. and then 10 minutes later, they would catch each other again. Patrick cursed himself whenever he got caught. but Patrick always blushed, because it meant Pete was looking over at him too.
but they got a new timetable this year. the only lesson Pete and Patrick share now only is English, but they are now on opposite sides of the classroom. they don't talk anymore.

it hurts.

patrick had never intended to get feelings for pete, but he had. God, patrick was crazy about him. and patrick was pretty sure pete felt the same, but they were both far too proud, and far too scared to admit their feelings for each other. so, the two boys pretended that the last year never happened. they pretended they never stole any glances. they pretended they didn't remember the way the other laughed, the way their smile formed.

it hurt.

they pretended they hadn't remembered everything about each other that they had talked about in that year. Pete pretended to not remember that Patrick's favourite colour is orange, and that he has the singing voice of an angel. Patrick pretended not to remember Pete play piano as well as bass, and his favourite holiday is Halloween, and he swears he will be dressing up for it forever. they pretended to forget.

it hurt.

and from time to time, Pete will strike up a conversation with Patrick. If it's in the corridor or by the lunchroom, anywhere. if Pete sees Patrick and pete has a spare few minutes, he always makes sure to go over to Patrick and talk to him. and every time, pete will try and make patrick laugh. just to hear it again. and pete didn't like to think about all the guys that flirt with Patrick and get to hear his laugh too.

it hurt.

and yeah, Patrick has both guys and girls flirting with him. and so does pete. they will both flirt back, because it's fun. it doesn't mean much.
but both boys know that no matter who they flirt with, it will never be like what they had with each other. they know it will never feel the same as what they had. but pete and patrick didn't like to think about that.

it hurt.

so Patrick watched. he watched Pete flirt with that girl. and all Patrick could think of was if she knew what Patrick knew about Pete. he wondered if this girl knew half the stuff Patrick knew. he wondered if she knew that Pete didn't like to be touched on the back of his neck, or that he hates scary movies, or that he hates black liquorice with a burning passion. he wonders if Pete has told her that space mountain is his favourite Disney ride, and that he secretly likes gardening, and he will only ever dance when he thinks no one is watching. patrick wonders, as the girl twirls her hair around her finger, and giggles at a joke pete probably just made. patrick wonders, and he hopes not. he didn't want her to know pete like he knew pete. but more than anything, Patrick wants to move on. he wants to not care. he wants to forget.

Because god, it hurts.
