"Oh Scarlet! Look at all of the lights!"

"Yep. Maybe when we get a house, we can put lights on it! Would you like that?" I asked him.

"Oh yes! Very much so!" he replied.

We were on our way to the soup kitchen, where we go every morning. Right before I was about to turn into it, I saw a sign on the door to the grocery store. I took Conner's hand, and walked across the street to the bright pink paper. It said...

Help wanted!!! Live in Nanny needed. Please call 357-2983.

Oh. I could really use that job. I've managed to save and collect almost 1,000 dollars over the last 3 years. By shining shoes, cleaning up the grease stains on other peoples clothing, and singing my heart out on the side of the road. If I was a live in nanny, I wouldn't need a house. But what about Conner? Would they let him stay aswell? I couldn't bear to live without him.

"Come on Conner. Let's go get  a phone so we can call this number." I said.

"Ok? Is something wrong?" he asked.

Of course he could tell I was troubled. He was only 4, but he was very smart when it comes to emotions. Whether it's reading them, or controlling them. A characteristic I never really did possess.

"Hello Scarlet! How nice to see you dear! Please, you and your brother have a seat, and we'll be over with some food in a moment." Ms Brenda said. Ms Brenda was a widow, and had been twice now. She says that she likes being alone. Even though she misses her past husbands of course, I think she just likes to get lost in her thoughts.

"Thank you Ms. Brenda, but I'm afraid only Connor will be eating this morning." I said. "There was a flyer on the grocery store door for a job as a live in nanny, and I need to call the number ASAP."

"Well, you can use the pay phone over on the wall." she said.

I walked over to the phone and put in one of my precious quarters. I typed in the number, and waited. It ringed once, twice, then someone answered.

"Hello?" It was a woman's voice.

"Hello." I said. " I was calling on account to your live in nanny flyer? I was wondering if you still needed someone for the job?" I continued.

"Oh yes! Well, would you be able to come in for an interview in say 45 minutes?" she asked.

"Well, I have a little brother. His name is Connor, and he is very well behaved. Would it be ok if I brought him with me?" I asked.

"Ummmm....... Sure. My little girl loves new friends. How old is he?"

"4. But he acts like he's 10. Very mature for his age, very mature." I replied.

" Great! Well I'll see you in a bit then. Oh, my names Chanel by the way." she said, and hung up.

This might be a new beginning. My fresh start. Now, I may be able to give Conner the life I always wanted!
