"Which do I start with?" I whispered to Dallas. We were about to start the first course, and I had what felt like a hundred different utensils waiting for me to use. The most I had ever known about or used was a spoon and a fork, and the occasional butter knife...
" Just start from the outside, and work your way in." he whispered. I looked at him and nodded, giving him a silent thank you. He smiled in return, and went back to the meal. I couldn't help but watch him, studying his face. He seemed so casual and relaxed. I guess I must've zoned out, because all of a sudden, I could hear my name being called from all directions. I snapped back to reality, and found everyone staring at me. Including Dallas. Why did he have to be so perfect? I slapped myself mentally. What is going on with me? I've never thought of guys like this before. Probably because of all I've had to do to make sure my brother and I made it through to our next meal.
"Sorry, I must have zoned out. What were we talking about?" I asked. I could feel Dallas looking at me, but decided to pretend not to notice. I didn't need to make things awkward between us. After all, Dallas is like my co-worker, and I need to try and keep things professional.
"We were just discussing how you and Connor used to live on the street," Mary said. I shuddered. Why did Connor have to bring this up? It had only been a few hours, why wasn't he just happy with what he had, and let go of the past? Oh wait, he's four.
"Oh. Yeah, it was pretty rough there for a while," I say. I heard a chuckle to my right, and looked over to see Tasha giggling to herself in her napkin. I sent her a glare and continued. "My parents weren't the best of people, let's put it that way." I thought back to that awful day and felt tears coming on. Think of something happy. Think of something happy. I looked up and smiled. I think Mary got the hint, because she didn't push the subject any further.
The rest if the dinner was fine. Casual chatter and the sound of clinking plates and silverware filled the large dining room. After everyone was finished, I helped Mary clear the table and I began washing dishes, as she dried and put away. I looked out the large window just above the sink, looking out at the large, luscious green yard. I sighed. I haven't had a luxury like this in such a long time. Actually, I've never had a luxury like this. Before the street and Connor, my parents and I lived in a cruddy apartment in a not so nice neighborhood. Perhaps miracles do exist? I began to hum a little tune my mother used to sing to me before I'd go to sleep.
She put that bottle to her head, and pulled the trigger. And finally drank away his memory. Life is short, but this time it was bigger. Than the strength she had to get up off her knees.
We found her with her face down in the pillow. Clinging to his picture for dear life. We laid her next to him beneath the willow, while the angels sang a whiskey lullaby.
LA la la la la la la. La la la la la la la. La la la la la la la. La la la la la la la.
God I loved Brad Paisley. Then again, that's all my mother ever listened too. Before.
"Do you sing?" Mary asked. I looked over, not realizing I had an audience. I blushed.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know.."
"No no no! I thought it was wonderful! You have such a lovely voice!" She said, obviously only trying to make me feel better. I laughed. Do I really? I've never thought so. No one but Connor has ever heard me sing. Oh well, its not like anything could cone from it. I have an amazing job now, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I shook my head, and watched as the water slowly drained from the sink.
